247 - 242 swap help

I have a 99 with a V8 and automatic.

I read a few threads and thought I had it figured out but it looks like I bought the wrong 242.

JY says it came from a 2002 WJ with a V8. Based on my research I thought all 242s from that year with a V8 were 242HD but the unit I got has the rubber boot on the output shaft.

So, do all 2002-3 V8s with Select-trac have the 242HD or just some?

Im not that concerned about the HD I really just want something that I can swap for my 247.

SO after more research Im sure I did not get a 242HD. Can anyone tell me if the Hd version is in ALL 2002-2003 V8s with Selct-Trac or just some?

No, it's all
The regular 242 is not rated as strong enough for the v8.

Hopefully he figured it out by now though.

Kind of an old thread but ever 242 from a v8 is HD. So the jy lied to the op. In contrast to what ratmonkey said though, the 242 ld is plenty strong enough for the v8. I ran one on my last jeep and there are several forum members that run them with no issues. You just have to swap the input shaft over from the 247 so that it will mate with the tranny.

I just did the 247 to 242 swap this last weekend. It should say 242 J on it for HD and you'll need the shorter rear driveshaft too. On the TC itselt, it's bolt on with only changing out the shifter bracket from yours to the 242. I attached a pic of my 242 as we were installing it.

we think it's strong enough, chrysler and new venture say it isn't as a stock application. just how it is.

I might have another one, it works perfect but has a hairline crack in the case. I'm going to open it up, clean it, order a new case cover and post it up in the next couple weeks since I'm traveling on biz.
