242HD Swap: Missing shift detent plug?
So, I'm doing the swap on my quadra drive equipped wj and after swapping it in, I notice there is a hole on the bottom of the case and it looks like a bolt is missing.
Comparing to the 247, it's in the same position as the big bolt on the bottom and my fsm seems to indicate that this bolt is called the shift detent plug.
Can I take that one off the 247 and put it into the 242?
With the missing shift detent plug, after replacing it, will there be any issues shifting the t-case? Will the case need to be split open?
One other question, where does the t-case breather hose go? mine is split and I would like to replace it. Other wise, I might just cut and adapt a small piece on.
Thanks

Also, after getting the case in and connecting the shifter cable, the case won't seem to shift from the assembly into 2wd.
Would the missing detent plug, o ring, spring, and plunger cause this sort of problem?
I have not started it up nor have I filled the case with ATF+4 yet. I did take it apart to do the TW 242HD sye. Perhaps I put it together wrong? Something wrong inside the case?

All are possible scenarios. As far as the detent, the one from the 247 should work fine. I bold should, because it really doesnt do much but hold the shifter in place and allow you to "feel" what gear you are in, but they may be slightly different.
On the transmission, you should have a bracket which the TC shifter cable goes through. Does yours have two holes or just one? If there is two holes, the cable should go through the bottom hole for the 242. (It went through the top hole for the 247) If you only have one hole, go to a junkyard and get one with two holes. This is more than likely why it will not shift into 2wd.

also make sure to lube up the shifter link on the transfer case and adjusting the linkage.... when I installed my 242HD I had the same problem with the case not wanting to go into 2WD but after using a lot lube and driving around in 4 Full Time for a couple of days it shifted with no problems

The bracket has two holes. I have relocated the shifter to the bottom hole.
Well I'm glad to know the detent doesn't do much. I'll replace it anyway.

I will do so. After I put the case together, I had moved the shifter arm around and thought that it seemed to shift fine. Right now it looks like it's shifted into 4WD-hi, so I should be able to at least drive it a little.
I'll report back...

make sure you are in Full-Time and Not Part-Time as damage can occur..... I mistakenly put part-time on my earlier post

Thanks all.
I went ahead and picked up the parts I needed at the dealership. I didn't know where else to buy them and I didn't want to search.
When installing, I noticed a sleeve still threaded in, apparently the jeep that had this t-case must have wrecked because the cap seemed to have sheared off leaving the threads still in the t-case.
Anyway, I installed the parts and everything seemed to shift fine now, stays in all gears now.
The real test will be to fill the case and take it for a drive, that is, after I get my rear drive shaft in.
Hopefully, no other problems.
Thanks guys.
