is the 242 transfer case on a XJ same as WJ?

i found someone selling a rebuilt transfer case for a good price, both my current transfer case (NV242) and the XJ for sale are 242J. would it be a direct swap? i do have an upgraded front drive shaft with U-joints

i was thinking, maybe i can just swap over my front fixed yoke, and rear tail cone so everything would match my current front & rear drive shafts? would this be possible?

what transfercase did your WJ come with ?

It will work. I just swapped a Quadra drive 247 for a 242J.

It was from an I6 WJ I had to swap the drive shafts (from I6) and slip yoke from my old drive shaft. You MAY have to swap the front yoke (on case held by large nut) with old t-case yoke. But depending on what case you have now, you may have to split both cases and swap input shafts too.

i have a 242J (NV) now, however i originally had the CV front drive shaft but converted that to U-joint when i lifted. seems like the only other difference is the older 242J's are a 2-wire, as compared to a 4-wire indicator switch.

I'd just swich the ele plugs, do you have a u joint coupler for the transfer
it should be all pretty simple, I'm going to swich back CV style front drive line
as soon as I can find some one to make me a drive shaft, becouse the double
cardan u joint is just a pain ITA to work on all the time and CV's spin more true, less to go wrong. but thats just my two cents''

As long as you get the CV shaft made in the right length, there's no problems. The OE CV shafts are no good with a lift though as the CV joints move to different length/angle than their normal operation and get chewed up in a big hurry.

As for the transfer cases, I thought that the XJ/ZJ 242 had a different input shaft spline than the WJ 242. I could be wrong, haven't done the swap.

Yep the OE drive wont handle it''. I have'nt done this transfer swap either
hopefully the splines match up, you would think they would'' just knock on some wood'' LoL

okay after a little more research, looks like the XJ 242 has a 21 spline input while my WJ 242 has a 23 spline. i guess this won't work then. maybe i'll be forced to find a transfer case from another Grand Cherokee only.

WJ - Select-Trac, 23 spline front input, 27 spline slip rear, w/rubber boot, w/o speedo hole, four wire indicator switch above shift lever, cup front output yoke, .840" exposed input shaft

XJ - Select-Trac, 21 spline input, 27 spline rear slip, two piece tail housing, fixed front yoke, 1.750 speedo hole, two wire shift indicator on tail, /750 exposed input

Can the input be changed out...seen it done to fit an i6 242 into a v8 application?

the 21spl inputs went away with the gear cut change. won't be able to swap them.

why do you want to swap cases anyways? is yours currently broken?

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

XJ used a 23-spline input in the 231/242 from about 1992-on.

XJ used the same external-boot driveshaft output as the ZJ from 1996-on.

I'm not the OP but I recently sold a WJ with the QD still in tact and if I end up keeping the 242 TW SYE setup (I have listed for sale) I would like to throw it in my next project...an XJ...if I can make it work.
