231 or 242 transfer case swap

Ok so i was looking into transfer case swaps. i know that the 242 is pretty straight forward. how ever i found that a 231 (common-trac) could be done as well, with minor modifacation. question is what is the difference between the 2.

selec-trac (242) has full time 4wd.

command-trac (231) does not. "only" part time 4wd.

the WJ gets its speed from the ABS tone rings on the axle shafts, not the transfer case. which makes axle swaps way more complicated.

Older 242s (from ZJs) have the speedo gear, but I don't believe you can use that type of speedo sensor with a WJ.

i have a 231HD. it has the speedo output but i haven't looked at hooking it up yet. i'm pretty sure it can be done (mallcrawlin has some posts on this). won't know for sure until i do it.
the main reasons i went with the 231 were the wide chain kit and SYE. i was able to lengthen my rear drive shaft by several inches
there are some SYE for the 242 but i've only seen hack-n-tap.

some people really like the full time 4wd for ice/snow but i don't have a use for that in SoCal.

I want to put a 231 in mine just because they seem to work so much better than the 242. Maybe I just have bad luck with 242s. Much better aftermarket for the 231 as well.

I'll agree with you on that. 4FT is a boss in the snow.

yeah the wide chain is what im intrested in. from what i have read they are better then the 242. just wanna here some input. as far as hooking up the speedo, from what i have read its just hooking up one wire to a 5v power sorce and the other to the wire (white and orange) going into the pcm i belive. as for speedo i know about the tone rings in the rear. that is why im looking into hooking up into the trasfer case for speedo.

Duranged how was installing the 231? what extra stuff did you need?

also will a 231 hold up with A V8?

I'll be swapping in a 231 to my rig before the holiday, and yes, you can use the VSS from the t-case for a speedo signal if you're swapping axles (I'm swapping in some JK axles at the same time). I haven't picked up a wider chain/sprocket set yet, but did pick up a 6-gear planetary to swap in while I'm changing input gears to try and get a little more beef for the WJ's V8 power.

The only things I had to do were 1) make sure I had the right input shaft length (2 7/8” IIRC) and 2) change the yoke on the t-case for the front DS. It bolted right up without any issues. The shift lever on the 247 is much longer than the 231 so you will also need to relocate the shift cable on one of the brackets. Not a big deal because the bracket already has a mounting point for it. I’m still running the stock front DS but obviously had to get one made for the rear because of the SYE.

The 231HD should be fine behind a V8…that’s what I had in my 5.9L Durango…hmm…you might be able to use one of those

I thought the JK axles had the tone rings

They do, but with a different number of splines than the WJ -- easier to take the signal from the t-case and adjust the gear as necessary than to try and manipulate the signal from the tone rings...

you can make your own HD 231 -- use a regular 231J, pick up a 241 planetary gearset (6 gears v. the normal 3), pull the chain and sprockets from a Chevy 231, and a 231D (Dodge) front output shaft. walla, HD231!

or you could buy a brand new one from JB Conversions already to install. Little more expensive but no need tosource out every single part and put it together.
