2004 Selec-Trac Transfer Case Issues

Hello all, I went for a bit of off-roading and I keep having the hardest time getting it back from part-time to 2wd. The lever will be in 2wd however it will stay in part time (light is off too) because when I am on the road it will either bind or I can hear it... It is supposed to be shift on the fly to my knowledge. And I was going 15-20 mph too.

Any ideas to why it is giving me such a hassle between 4x4 and 2x4? (It has been doing this for a while now, this was not a first time occurrence)

Thanks

Edit: It take multiple tries of slamming the lever back up to 2wd when it is rolling in neutral for it to pop out of part time

Probably lost the plastic ends/tabs off the internal shift forks. When they go, the fork doesn't have any "reach" left.

If I may offer a suggestion....

When shifting between any of the modes above neutral, I generally shift, then tap the throttle twice to torque everything into place. I read that on here once, and it's worked like a charm for me ever since.

Shift to 4hi-gas-gas, go.

shift to 2wd-gas-gas-go.

Mine does this too, even after a rebuild.... I shift from 4lo or pt or what ever into 2wd while slowly moving. Stop shift to neutral, reverse.. while moving slow in reverse shift the transmission to neutral and it should help it pop in, you'll feel hear and see the t case shifter settle in gear

I have just swapped my 247 (Quadra-Trac) to a 242 (Selec-Trac) and I noticed that too. When I had it in 4Full/Part then switch back to 2HI I can tell it's still in 4WD since when I make a U-turn the wheels hop. But usually I just either drive a bit more or go a few feet in reverse but after I go back into 4WD then slam it back up to 2WD.

Hope this helps!

My old one would do the same, just like mentioned above "popping" the gas or dropping it into reverse and backing up a little would usually flip it back into 2wd.

Seems like most are having that issue or something like it.

I do not know off hand when the last t-case service was. I think there was a fluid change at 50k and now there is like 95k miles. I will have to x2 check my records.

My dad's 242 did the same thing in his jeep. His did it all consistently the entire time he had it. All the way back to when it was a baby, all the way up to when he sold it with 187k miles. I normally would just stop completely, shift to neutral, then back to 2wd. Sometimes I would have to shift into 2wd moderately hard. I think the linkage probably just needs to be adjusted a little or something simple like that. There's nothing wrong with the case.

Going to go with a fluid change and see how that works. Then go from there and then look at adjusting
