2003 Grand Cherokee Overland...

Does anyone have one of these?
I found one used and loaded for a good price and low milage.

I would be trading in my TJ and need more space, so I want to stay with a jeep and this one looks like a good deal. Anyone have any good or bad things to say about the Overland versions?

Thanks for the input.

Everyone I know that has one loves it. I understand they have more interior room than the ZJ.

I have an '04 Overland & love it so far.

One drawback is that they're a little pricey, even used. I found that with the rebates & 0% financing, I could actually get a new one cheaper/same price as buying a low mileage used one. Plus, you get the added benefit of picking the options that you want (which on an Overland isn't many, since most everything is standard)!

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it and what kind of rebates did you get? I am looking to keep my monthly payment as low as possible (who isn't???) and I am not sure that I could do that even with the incentives on a new one without paying for what seems to be 100 yrs.

Thing that sucks for me is that I found an 03 with 12,000 mile for a really good price...someone got to it before I could.

I bought mine back in July of '03, not long after the '04's were released. It stickered for $41,600 (has every option except the engine block heater).

If I remember correctly, I got them down to $36,000, with a full bumper-bumper 7/70 plan included in the deal (not just the powertrain that is typical on most DC vehicles). If you go for the navigation, a 70,000 mile warranty is a must! Then, when the deal was almost done, I sprung the fact that I wanted to trade my wife's car in on the deal (which, by the way, is always the best way to go about it. Never let a dealer know you want to trade until the outright selling price is firmly established. Same logic works if you have a Jeep Visa card or GM Mastercard).

I remember looking at several used '03 Overlands at that time with 10,000-20,000 miles, & everybody wanted $34,000-$35,000 for them. So I may have paid $1,000 or so more, but I got the next model year (which has some cosmetic updates), plus I got to truly pick the Jeep I wanted.

I have an 03 Overland and couldn't be happier about the purchase. It has performed well as a daily driver and light off roader (family vehicle so I can't tear it up too much but yes she has been off road in Alaska and New Mexico). I have had no major trouble out of mine. The only warranty work that I have needed was to replace the heated mirror control shortly after purchase and passanger door moulding was coming loose and causing a tapping sound at highway speeds. I would buy it again if I had to do it over. You may consider the 02 model as it apparently has more content in it. The 03's started the decontenting practice of Jeep.

What do you mean by more "content in it"?

The 2002 had some features that were discontinued in 03. Like some of the trip computer functions and the passenger side mirror being linked to the memory feature. Small things like that. nothing major but if you find a 2002 and a 2003 Overland forsale you might want to give the 02 a close look. That is my personal opinion and that isn't meant to take anything away from the 03 and 04 Overlands as they are all worth the money spent.

Gotcha. I had heard that some of the early WJ's had the passenger mirror linked to memory, but I didn't know what year the change was made.

Thanks for all of your input. I have been looking around and I am just going wait until the right one shows up. I have found a few used, but none of them have the right combo of options.

Does anyone know when they started putting the LATCH (lower anchors) hooks into the seat? I know the 2002's don't have them, but I was don't know about the 2003's since I have not yet been able to look at one.

Also, is anyone toting kids around in one of these? My wife is concerned about there not really being a "middle" back seat. Any thoughts about convincing her otherwise would be of help.

Thanks.

I haul our 5 month-old around in the middle part of the backseat of my Overland without any problem. My '04 has the latch system and has 4 anchors in the back seat. I simply anchor the seat using the inside 2 and it works just fine.

I will have to check but I am pretty sure mine has the LATCH on it also.

Here is another question as I have now drove a couple of used ones.

If you are parked and rev the engine, is there a high pitch whine that comes from the engine? This could be on any Grand Cherokee I guess, as I have tested some Limiteds and Special Edition Laredo's.

Problem solved...

Just got a 2003 Limited, loaded with Up Country suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, hitch with only 13,800 miles. Good deal. Good Jeep.

Congradulations on your Jeep. A Limited was what I was looking for originally but all they had on the lot was 2 Overlands. Got one heck of a deal for Alaska and took it home.
