2001 GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO 4.0 Engine ??

Hey all, I drove my JGC home the other week, was fine. Went across town so the GF could shop I took a nap. About 3 hours later when I started it, there was a pronounced knock in the engine. I shut it down checked everything seemed fine. Drove it home, ran ok didnt overheat. When I got home I had about an extra quart in my crank case. Sticky hand when I held my hand in front of exhaust. But not wet. Put some headgasket sealert Bars in the Radiotor and removed the excess from crank case. Starts and runs fine, havent drove it since. Talked to a guy that works at local Chrysler jeep dealer. Said best bet it to put new motor in it. Problem is that a used motor with 100,000 is a thousand bucks 2000 installed. A rebuilt is 3100 installed. Any info or opionons on this would be great, as Im tryin to raise the funds to fix it. Its my only means of transportation and really dont have the funds for new motor. Thanks All in Advance.

Sorry to hear about you jeep.
A used motor is just that. How well has it maintained? It's a gamble.
For just a little more you can have a new one. It is almost double the cost, but I personally would rather piece of mind.

It was well maintained uses no oil at 135,000 hate to put all that into it. But you would think that I could find more wrecked JGC around as many as are on highway. But not much luck. Wanting to know what remanufactures are good and reliable. Ive had some tell me to change head gasket and put new crank bearings in and should be good to go for a while. Looking for advise while I round up my funds. Thanks

Replace head gasket. Pull one rod bearing and check condition. But all in all not bad job to do, and fairly cheap

Being an '01, there's a very good chance this is more than just a blown head gasket and could very well be a cracked 0331 head. If everything was fine before and this just happened all of a sudden (you didn't have issues with overheating and losing coolant), I wouldn't be as concerned about the lower end. Consider pulling the head and having it checked or replaced, new head gasket, fluids, you should be good to go for a long time and in less than $1000.

I would consider getting the engine repaired. My #6 cylinder cracked a piston skirt which I had repaired for under $2000. In the process, my mechanic replaced all six pistons, seals, and bearings. For less money than a used engine, I have the peace of mind that my lower end has been recently reworked. If your problem the head gasket or cracked head, repair would be much less.
Many used an remaned engine shops will quote prices low, and then charge addons once they have your vehicle taken apart.

If you want to spend $2900 for a new engine and have 265HP here ya go. Or there is one with 315HP for $3500 and they have a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. But then again i dont know how well the trans would hold up to all this.

I can keep mine for the extra's that Ive put in it and be good to go shortly. Just need to decide on it by Monday. You guy's have been great, so dont stop. Lookin for your 2 cents.......Thanks Hoser

I dont think I am seeing everything here. you said it starts and runs fine. does it still knock?
Are you saying that you suspect that coolant entered the crank case? What did you do to look for the head gasket leak? Why are you checking the exhaust for stickyness?
Did you change the oil and see if it still knocks? how is the oil presure? is the engine/radiator low on coolant? What did the oil look like? is it clean , dirty, does it look like chocolate milk?
you may only need a head gasket, why replace the engine if it doesnt need it.
oh yeah, what year is the $700.00 dollar one ? if its a 99, 00, or 01 I would pass unless its been rebuilt, those years are prone to piston skirt failures. So even if you did buy and install it it could die on you again

Also remember that a replacement engine must also come from a gcl or it wont work.

Yep changed oil still has the knock. I checked the exhaust as soon as it started knocking. The oil definatly had antifreeze in it. Have white greenish residue on oil fill cap. The engine found is a 03. Just tryn to decide on what to do. I have to let him know by Monday on wether I want the engine. Thanks
