2001 Grand Cherokee 4wd problem

I have the above mentioned Jeep and I'm having trouble getting it out of 4wd. Going in and staying in is fine. It used to be that if I drove backwards for about 10-15 feet it would disengage. Now that doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks

i too have issues with my 01 select trac coming out of 4x4. It's especially horrible on grippier surfaces and i sometimes have to stop and turn the vehicle off for it to come out of 4wd. I have changed the fluid, but didnt make a diff.

Make sure you drain, "flush" with fresh ATF+4, then fill... make sure your tires have correct psi in them and that they're balanced, that can definitely make a difference. If not those, the linkage cables may need adjusting if the those things don't do much.

I read on a jeep site that any kind of torque/pressure on the transfer case can cause it not to shift out of 4wd. I have this problem but it's from bad wear on my tires that I need to replace. Different tire pressures, tire sizes (from wear or other), and other factors can cause this. It takes me a few tires in reverse to get out of 4wd but I always eventually get out.
