Wj 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Quad AWD front end noise whine howl.

Jeep is full time 4WD AWD - I get a howling / whining noise from what appears to be the front end of my Cherokee - I only get the noise when I am accelerating and maybe a second or two after I take my foot off the gas pedal. If I am coasting in drive or neutral no noise. As soon as I hit the gas - the noise comes back instantly. The noise gets louder with increased speed - turns to more of a howling. I took it to one place and they said it was the front drive shaft - they took it out and said the noise went away.

Took it to a gear guy and he said not in the drive shaft - he thinks its a rear end noise? Another guy said it could be the transfer case? Anyway to diagnose the problem from the symptoms?

Also at times if I am backing up and have the wheels cut really hard I will get a clunking noise that seems to be coming from the front end as well. Any help would be appreciated. The Jeep is AWD

Sounds to me like your front differential is on its way out. Howling on accel while the fear is driving and clunking from too much lash.

That was my case when I had similar howling. Rear diff went kaput...

My Grand Cherokee is faster than 80% of all snakes. To give you a reference point, my Jeep is somewhere between a snake and a mongoose. And a panther.

From what I have found, it is common for GC's to
1.) Kind of skip when you have the wheel cut all the way, this is because of the 4wd all time engaging
2.) Whining noise upon acceleration (not sure how bad?)
3.) Make weird noises when you compress the brake and then switch gears.

so did YOU drive it after the front drive shaft was out to confirm or deny if it was the drive shaft?

Same exact thing is happening with mine. If you find out what it is before I go to get it fixed within a month, let me know!

Transfer case; the CV joint is the joint at the end of the shaft that allows it to attach to the transfer case and flex. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

I'm buying this part:

Howling noises on acceleration sounds like a front diff. problem. Not uncommon for the front pinion bearings to loose their preload because of a faulty pinion nut/washer combo on the WJ, especially on the full time 4 wheel drive models. There is a TSB out for this where the nut/washer combo is replaced by a flanged nut which holds better. After 11 years this could be your issue and is a simple fix with the right tools. Before ripping up the front diff, go the dealer and ask them to reset the front pinion bearing preload with the flanged nut from the TSB. They will also change to a new style crush sleave, and probably have to change your pinion seal.. They will know what your talking about. The overwhelming majority of private shops have no clue what they are doing and are only good for brakes, mufflers, oil changes and the like. Many folks that call themselves mechanics are nothing more than oil changing monkeys.
