2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Hi guys, I'm from Canada and I was torn between the Ford Explorer and the Jeep Grand Cherokee but I have decided that I am going to be a Jeep Grand Cherokee owner so I have begun my search for a reasonably priced Jeep Grand Cherokee. I came across one that seems like a really good deal to me. The guy is selling it for what I think is a good price as he is moving and will have to sell his Jeep. Here are some of the details:

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
4.0L engine
4x4
cloth interior
Auto
no accidents
only 139,000kms which is about 86,000+ miles
PRICE: $4,200 (negotiable - I think I can get it down to the high $3000 range)

My main question is reliability. Is the 4.7L engine and tranny way more reliable than the 4.0L? Should I spend more to get the bigger engine and higher mileage? It just seems to me that this is a good deal and I should just grab it. Is the 4.7L engine and tranny that much better than the 4.0L? Do you notice that much difference?

Thanks

The 4.7 with the 545rfe is That. Much better, stronger Trans, more power, same mpg.

Also check out wjjeeps.com for all the info you need.

so i'm looking at these two right now:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rd...535401417.html

http://abbotsford.en.craigslist.ca/cto/2503450077.html

Right now I am leaning towards the 4.0L because it's cheaper and has much lower mileage. However, would be nice to know your thoughts. Thanks

Now that I've had a 4.0 WJ with a broken piston, and how much it seems to be happening more and more as these 4.0's get higher mileage...makes me leary of recommending one. The 4.7's have their issues with sludge I suppose but a quality synthetic and a quality filter are really good remedies for that.

is the broken piston a common problem among the 4.0 WJs? I'm guessing theres no way of preventing that.

If anyone could share they opinions between the two or at least their thoughts on both ads, it would be great. I know for sure the 4.0 guy is willing to negotiate a little more.

Thanks.

oh yeah, also, the 4.7L needs exhaust manifold gasket and the front axle boots.

The way I think, if you plan to DD and keep it stock, and can use what ever gas you want, then 4.0L is good, if you want off road, mod it, and want power, use only premium gas and tow alot, then get the 4.7l. for me I choose 4.0L just for DD and can use what ever gas I want and easy maintaince. if I want go fast I take my trans am out and can beat all the jeep on the road ( accept the SRT8 ^^ ) but anyway first time I buy the my jeep I Never though about going fast or mod it for off road anyway. Just get me to school/work/friend that all I need. I usually go track alot, but recently I want get away from racing/fast car, I need focus on school and something bigger to take my kid to school, that y I bough a jeep.

bottem line, I think 4.7L will make you happy if that the only car you have, for me I have my other 2 toy to make me happy ^^

That 4.7 looks to be in great shape, and the engine/trans are great! You also get an upgraded rear axle and that particular one has the tow hook/skid plate package and may be equipped with the UpCountry suspension group (taller springs/monotube shocks).

Overall, it is much better-equipped and seems to be in better shape than the Laredo and that counts for a lot. These things can be a big headache if they are abused and then sold off dirt cheap.

Also, you don't need premium gas for ANY of the WJs, they all run fine on regular. The 4.7 High Output (not available until 2002) can run premium for a slight performance boost, but runs fine on regular.

...as does the owner's manual, even for the 4.0L. But, for daily driving, you can use regular with ANY WJ.

To answer your question

The 4.0 with low mileage and cheapest price is best value for money. lower mileage makes a world of difference.
The issue with pistons was only 1999 and resolved for 2000 year and on. But get that confirmed as I'm not sure.

If all was equal same mileage same price
I say 4.7 but life doest work that way. the 4.7 v8 are more desirable and fetch a higher price. So expect to pay more for one in same condition.
On this site all you'll get is v8 4.7 is best over and over until your ears bleed.
I drive a diesel so don't care if it 4.7 or 4.0.

Good luck with tracking down a WJ to meet your needs.

I agree, its kinda hard to find a low mile 4.0L, since it go depenable peoples ride it to 200k miles before thinking selling it, unless it give problem at early miles. no one sell a perfect car to you, alway a problem in their, but if you ever get a perfect working use car, consider yourself lucky. but some time you gotta pay little more to get a low miles and in good condition.

yeah i think its just works out that he has to move so thats why so cheap. and i am pretty much just using it as a daily, no offroading, no towing, maybe a tent trailer once a year if any. so i think the 4.0L is good enough for me and it seems like a good deal. definitely going to get it inspected first. an extra $2000 for a v8 with slightly higher mileage, the 4.0 seems like the better deal and fits my needs. am i right?

also, what should i ask the mechanic to pay special attention to or check extra carefully just in case for the 2000 laredo?
