2000 Grand cherokee loose folding mirror
Hi,
I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee ltd. with heated folding mirrors. My drivers side mirror has lost it's tension so it doesn't stay down tight on the base that it swivels on. I can lift it up a few inches above the base. Right now I'm using a wire tie to hold it down. Does anyone know if there's a way to tighten this up. I can't find any breakdown schematic for mirrors and I really can't afford a new one. Thanks in advance for any help.

Make that two of us. I have zip ties holding mine. I'll be glad to hear if there's a fix.

My passenger side does the same thing. Has since I got it in '03. I've never been able to find how it goes together ...or comes apart to fix it. I ended up working in some 2 part clear epoxy between the mirror head and base to make it hold position.
I've had to do it a couple of times due to an impact that made the epoxy give up grip. You'll want to add in just enough to make it stay still but give up grip if it needs to. I fotgot about that "feature" till this thread. Let us know if you get a permanent fix....

That's funny, I have a similar problem. Mine on the drivers side moves freely forward and backward, so I have to adjust it any time I close the door. Maybe by pulling off the interior door panel you can get to the screws securing it? I would imagine if you had it off the Jeep it would be easier to find out how it comes apart.
I haven't bothered tinkering with mine, but I am definitely staying tuned to this one.

I just replaced the driver side mirror on my WJ about a month ago. You need to peel the door trim back a bit to get the mirror off (see this website for step-by-step directions. It's really not hard at all.
You can pick up a OE replacement mirror (Mopar part #55155233AD) from the dealership for about $120 or this one for $52.95

I've had zip ties holding my pass side mirror snug for a couple years. Last month the garage I took it to for state inspection would not pass it. I used 4 dabs of clear silicone between the upper and lower. It's holding tight. Guys at the garage shook their head trying to figure out how I fixed it.

But I suppose it cannot be truly fixed for nearly free as far as we know....

My mirror is perfect other than it being loose and lifting up. It's also heated so that makes it an expensive replacement for me. They don't sell parts for it. Someone must know a way to get inside and tighten it down somehow. Every time I go to the car wash they push the mirror in and break the zip tie I have on it. Glue or sillicone is good idea if you want to keep the mirror in one position but I really want to make it work the way it's supposed to. My thanks to you guys for all the suggestions so far.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, lads, but sometimes you have to replace a broken part. I know that nobody wants to hear that answer. The chorus will come back: "If I wanted to be told to replace the part, I would have just gone to the dealer."
OK, fair enough, but in this case, it happens to be the correct course of action. Replace the mirror. It will last you another 8-10 years. It is a good investment.

Mirror issues
This can be remedied without replacement and without removing the mirror from the vehicle. push the mirror all the way forward and look on the door side in the cup that the mirror swivels in. There are two slightly raised 'bumps' in there. They get worn down from use. Apply a drop of super glue to each of them, allow to set, then test the mirror for proper stop. If it is still loose apply another drop of glue until it is secure.
