I bought this ke fob from ebay for like $10. Then i swapped the guts from my remote into the ebay one. I had to modify it some so it was easy to push the buttons. Then i got my jeep key copied for $6. Now to use it for cranking, the sentry or sensor part has to be very close to the ignition. There is one phillips screw under the steering wheel. Remove that and zip tie the original key very close to the ignition. If you dont get it close it may not start or may cut off when driving. Enjoy. This works, but imho the new fob is heavy and doesnt do much to reduce the weight or size of the original fob and remote.
I've actually already done this on an old jeep, i just figured some pics of of the process in one organized post for some of the not so technically inclined members would be appreciated.
I also bought this key. I attempted to transfer my fob transponder into the new key fob and went out to test (lock, unlock) and no go. I took it apart to check if I missed anything, and tried a second time. No success. I then put the stuff back in the original fob and now I can't unlock/lock the doors with the fob. Any ideas? Frustrated. I was almost sure the hardest part would be getting the chip out of the key. But I can't even use the fob. I guess there's a chance that the batteries are dead, but the original fob worked earlier today. The circuit board for the fob was a very, very tight fit inside the flip key. I actually had to file down some of the plastic material (being very careful not to file any of the circuit connections. I also filed, shaved some of the material inside the flip key to make it fit.
Side note, I only have one set of keys/fob for my WJ.
On a plus note, the jeep dealership cut the key free of charge. They also used the VIN number to get the cut instead of trying to cut off my 11 year old key. That, so far, is the only positive thing so far about trying to do this mod.
Any advice to my next step? I'm thinking that I'll have to buy a new fob and have it programmed, I hope not. First I'll try new batteries and see if I just had a weak signal.
I don't mean to revive an old thread, but I have just attempted this mod. Got my key cut and transponder chip glued into the shell. I can not get the circuit board to fit properly inside the shell. Like one of y'all said I had to shave down some of the inside of the shell. The most I was able to get working is the lock button, nothing else works. I take all the guts out and put it back into my OEM fob and everything works fine. I cant figure out what the issue is. Also, haven't found that write up if it still exists.
I have found that sometimes the new buttons don't really push down all the way. I gave up on my flip key mod and installed an avital remote start which comes with a different transmitter.
