No one has mentioned the Mickey Thompson Baja STZ tires, has anyone tried or know anything about these new tires??

Hi guys I'm newbie on this forum and in off-road at all.
I just got a first Jeep and had couple of trips with it to the desert - as this is most common in the place I live.

I got stuck few times, mostly due to lack of experience , however I believe changing a tire/rim combination might improve sand/desert capability of the car.

Although I like above presented solutions, I was thinking about fixing smaller rims -16'' (presently stock 18''), so i get even greater footprint on the send when deflated. Also was considering if installing steel rims would not be a good idea as I believe it is harder to loose tire.
For that planning to buy 275/70/R16 (maybe 275/75/R16 but those seem to be too high).

I'm really curious about your opinion ... any serious cons ??

Well first thing is what is your engine? If you have the Hemi the smallest wheel that will clear the brakes is the 18 inch. If you have the pentastar I believe the smallest you can do is a 17 inch. I maybe mistaken on the 17 inch but if you have the hemi due to the HD brakes anything under 18 will not fit.

16s will likely not clear the calipers as 17s are the smallest that supposedly fit the v6 and 18s the smallest that fit the v8 so unless you want to grind down your stock calipers the 16s will not fit.

so I have to check what is available with size 275/70/17 (or maybe even 275/65/17), (after all I read here I guess 275/75 /17 will not fit)..
If you could only comment also is steel rims are good idea or not ?

275/70/17 (~32.2" tall) might fit but it might rub depending on the tires actual specs. 275/65/17 (~31.1" tall) should fit easily with no rub unless you are trying to run a 17x10 wheel with it.

Maybe I'll have to order in states ...

Also was wondering if any of you guys had experience inner bead locks like those for example: http://www.innerairlock.com/beadlocks/

Yeah I have some sand but nothing like you have. My Jeep has no issues crawling the sandy (and some nasty slick clay) trails behind my house with the tires fully aired up to 36 psi and I have 265/50/20s so I have 1" less sidwall on each par of my tires. I will be running 275/55/20 tires eventually or I might go down to 18s and run 275/65/18s. I have not seen inner beadlocks but if that works than it would be a good mod to have.

New Plan for me though. I sold the stock 20 inch wheels and tires. Monday I have 305/60/18s comming and 18 x 9.5 wheels as well. I love the look of the stock 20s but they needed to be wider like at least a 9.0 IMO and during any kind of offroading the 20s will get messed up very easily do to little sidewall (50 or 55 series tire).

If you mean the 285/60/18's - it works fine with my QL at it's normal and highway setting (1/2" lower). There is another jeep on here without QL with the same tire on XD wheels also who has not mentioned any issues (see page 5 of this thread)

Lots of good looking wheel/tire combos on here. I am looking at going skinny and taller on the Mopar Offroad Wheels or possibly even the Spare Steelies and plan to get the Rocky Road Outfitters 2.5" lift. All that being said, anyone have a guess if 265/70/18 (equiv. to 32.6x10.7x8.3) would fit?
