Need help...

So my jeep won't start I got in it to start it and it was like the battery was dead, then when i revved the engine it started and kept going as long as I put my foot on the gas. But as soon as I took it off to put it in reverse it dies. Does anyone have any ideas to what it could be I don't have a lot of money to get my jeep fixed right now so if I could do it myself it would be great. Thanks

Need some more information and symptoms, but my alternator went out at 38k miles. Looks like it may be part of an impending recall in November. Get a volt meter and perform a function test.

OP your post does not make sense. If it starts like the battery is dead that means the engine won't turn over. If the engine won't turn over how can you rev it to get is started. Would love to help, but need more description of what is happening, alone with (as XJ2WJ2 stated) model/year/engine, etc. Color is optional.
