Mpg question...

I have a question on how the gc ecu determines mpg while you're driving. Are there sensors that measure how much fuel is actually entering the engine over a certain distance? Or does it have sensors that measure speed and rpms and calculates it that way? Reason I'm asking is because depending on which method, a person that tunes the engine, might get incorrect mpgs. Lol I hope my question isn't too confusing.

Most fuel metering nowadays is calculated at the injector level and integrated over distance traveled.
