Map Updates for 2014 Navigation System

I hadn't really considered purchasing a map update for my 2014 Grand Cherokee until my wife took a trip alone this weekend to visit relatives, and encountered a multitude of errors.

I just looked on the internet to see what's available and everything directs me to the Chrysler Uconnect site where it appears that updates are available for $149. When you proceed to select the correct version, a message says "Out of Stock. Check back in Mid-October." What kind of BS is this! How can they run out of a product that transfers 0's and 1's to a flash drive?? Is this a joke?

Maybe I don't really need an update after all. Are there other ways to get updated maps for the factory unit? I realize that a smart phone is probably the best bet, but I'd like to know what others are doing to keep the factory installed maps up to date. thanks

Not the maps, just the Uconnect software. Map updates are only available from HERE. http://chryslergroup.navigation.com/...ChryslerNA/USD

Thanks for the information, jacko. It's obvious that by saying they are out of a product, this is simply a cover for the fact that they are way behind in having anything new to sell.

Last question. This statement appears on the website you linked:
"IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACTIVE UCONNECT 8.4A NAVIGATION SYSTEM, YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. PLEASE CLICK HERE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACTIVATE YOUR UCONNECT® 8.4A (RA3) NAVIGATION SYSTEM." Of course there will be a very large fee to activate the system.

I have never subscribed to Uconnect but I have a functioning, outdated navigation system, Sirius radio, etc. So, do I already have an "active Uconnect 8.4A navigation system," or will I be required to subscribe to Uconnect to get the updated maps when available?

thanks

If you have the navigations system, sounds like you do, its active from the factory.

I hear that HERE is working on map updates, but the updates are delayed. Hence the not available till October note. You have the latest map. I usually use a stand alone Garmin or the maps application on a smart phone (or PC) to verify routing.

Uconnect maps have always been far behind. I don't get why either. Why pair with Garmin and not with a live link Google map? My '06 vs '14 maps are not much different except for some new tech.

Maps for any OEM integrated Nav system, regardless of manufacturer, are far behind. Its not Garmin, who only provides the Nav software GUI. FCA paired with HERE and HERE has been in disarray for years. Currently HERE may be the only game in town for NAV map data, however. Google doesn't share their NAV data with anyone. Big brother Google wants to know everything about you, and what exactly you are doing, to sell to advertisers. Thats not been shown as profitable enough in a OEM integrated use case. Apple may have teamed with a couple manufactures to share their maps, or maybe that was just talked about.

My 14 with NAV has been frustrating me for a while....I end up using my phone for most of my navigating.

Old Maps

We all know the maps are old, but one trick I have found very helpful is to use the UConnect App and use the mapping software on the app and then send it to the vehicle. it is a ton easier to find stuff in Google Maps through the app and send it to the vehicle. Even newer addresses that are not in the in vehicle map will get you very close to your destination. It has worked for me.

That's a good tip but it requires a subscription to the services, right? No thanks!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: An Uconnect Software Update must be performed before this map update can be installed.

Does this mean that a trip to the dealer is required?
