how to change daylight running blub 2012 grand cherokee Overland with the HID's

yes i was wondering if any other overland owner has thought about changing the daylight running bulb. i have took a look and tried to figure how to change it and i still cant figure it out. I read that you can go through the removable plastic piece it the wheel well but i tried it and look with my flash light and couldn't see them just a bunch of wires. also removed the plastic piece above the lights and still cant see how to get in there without removing half the stuff in the engine compartment. well if anybody has any ideas im all game.

If it's anything like the 2001 versions (not sure it is) you'll open the hood and see that there's one screw above the headlight that you undo. It's a really long one. Once that's out just give the entire headlight unit a tug until it frees itself. The lights are then accessible to change. If I didn't make any bit of sense, check out some Youtube videos. Video makes up for a thousand words of bad descriptions. ;-) Good luck!

The 2011+ you unscrew the drl bulb housing from the back of the lamp (1/4 turn) . The problem is on the drivers side you have to remove the air cleaner box to reach it. Not hard but it takes a bit more time, have to remove the hoses going to it then pull it off it's rubber mounts straight up.

2013 White V8 Limited, 285/60/18 Terra Grapplers, 25000 miles problem free
2011 Black V8 Overland, retired at 46000 miles with QL problems

There is one screw on top that looks like it holds the headlight in place but havent tried to take it out I guess I could try. I will try and let everybody know.

I thought about this change, but then decided it wasn't worth the cost or effort considering I'm always driving and don't see the DRLs anyway.

well i tried to remove the screw on top of the headlight assembly but the headlight assembly didn't come out, and after going to ebay and seeing some used 2011 grand Cherokee headlights look to be 2 bolts below the headlights. so you would have to remove the front bumper to get the lights off... but i did manage to get my had in there to take one out it wasn't easy but i did it. driver side is harder.

Ringrosa- have you had any luck getting the headlight assy. out?

I'm trying to replace my turn signals and can't get them out with the headlight assy. still on the vehicle.

There is an easier way...

Take out air filter...(undo two spring clamps)... Take out plastic rivet holding down windshield washer fluid bottle...and push bottle back a bit. Slide hand in 1/4 turn and pull out (bulb 5137). Replace in reverse.

I run silverstars for DRLs so I have to replace them twice a year. Very easy if you position yourself right. Pass side: Stand beside the light looking towards the rear. With your right hand upside down, fit it by the fuse box to back of the DRL, find the socket and twist 1/4 turn. Sounds strange but works! Drivers side: I remove the pin holding the windshield washer reservoir and carefully move it toward the left side allowing enough room for your left hand to sneak by it and into the area of the DRL. Again 1/4 turn. Honestly, I can replace both bulbs in 5 minutes.

took mine to my mechanic, had a cup of coffee as he replaced it. Cost $35 plus bulb but the coffee was free.

Noticed that the drl bulbs were burning the headlight bezels so I went to dealer and show the maintenance manager what was happening so they replaced both of my headlights crazy. Just so people know anybody with the hid projector take a look at the drl bulb and see if it's burning the top of the bezel the the drl is I had a overland edition. Then I went onto change my drl bulb with a led bulb that doesn't create so much heat. Getting it out isn't too hard just have to have the right angle on it. Oh yeah if any body want to know how much new headlights whole assembly cost the driver side is more than the passenger side I thnk the driver side was just over $1000 and the passenger was under $1000 crazy right, but didn't cost a thing it was all under warranty.

I replaced mine with the higher wattage bulbs they made to keep the GM DRLs from burning out so quick. Think its 1441. My sockets are black also, but it is not melting or discoloring the housings, just the socket itself. The last one I removed, the plastic on the bulb had melted over the contact and caused it to stop working. Hence the higher wattage replacement which is made of stronger plastic.

I know this thread is stale, but I finally had to do this myself on a 2012. I don't know why Jeep made it so hard, but here's a video someone was nice enough to make. http://www.carcarekiosk.com/video/20...ylight_running

Now on the 2012 they changed it where you don't really need to take the entire air filter assembly out. I just took the top part off and took the air scoop off and I gained access to the light bulb.

Hope that helps in the future.

Thanks for posting, I just noticed the other day that the DRL is burnt out on the driver's side of our 2012 Limited with HIDs.
