Most drivers dont like the diesel sound and the competition from MB, BMW and VW are quiet.
I can remember back when Rabbit diesels were popular. I just never understood since I had my Rabbit modified with a larger throttle body, recurved distributor and free flow exhaust. Always preferred high revving screaming engines in cars with peaky hp and torque curves. I do prefer pick ups with diesels for towing. Since I dont tow a diesel makes no sense for me. To each his own as long as the govt doesnt force diesels on us like in the EU and the Uk through tax policy.
BTW the latest thing in powerplant technology are hybrid gas diesel engines taking the best of a gas engine and the best of diesel engine and combining them in one engine. Mercedes has a S class size prototype that returns 35+mpg. No batteries or electric motors.
