2013 Order Availability?

I'm almost ready to finally order my new Jeep. I'd like to wait for a model year 2013, as to get the new 8-speed transmission.

I haven't started contacting dealers yet, but was curious if anyone here has heard, or can confirm, when orders for the 2013's can be taken, and when an anticipated build start would be?

I'd imagine dealers won't start taking 2013 orders till late summer at the very earliest. I thought they don't get the new model year in till September, if I recall.

Though all dates are subject to change, the inital date for acceptance of orders from dealers is June 6, 2012 with a projected startup date of July 2, 2012.

I'd love to see the 8-speed. The extra gears would get you off the line quicker [edit:as the ratios would be lower], and taller gearing at the top end would easily squeak a few for mpgs on the nice highway cruises.

The final drive of the 8 speed is the same as the current transmission so you won't get better mpg on the highway.

From wk2jeeps.com:

8HP45 Gear Ratios:
1ST 4.69:1
2ND 3.13:1
3RD 2.10:1
4TH 1.67:1
5TH 1.28:1
6TH 1.00:1
7TH 0.84:1
8TH 0.67:1
REVERSE 3.30:1

65RFE

1st 3.00
2nd 1.67 upshift / 1.50 kickdown
3rd 1.0
4th 0.75
5th 0.67
Reverse 3.0

With the Pentastar V6 and HP8, the Chrysler 300 achieved 0-60 in 7.2 seconds, and cruised at 70 mph with the engine at a mere 1,400 rpm. Gas mileage for this combination is expected to be 30 mpg, up from 27, with city mileage rising from 19 to 20 mpg. The torque rating of 331 lb-ft for this version of the transmission is far above the Pentastarís 260 lb-ft.

Specs were sort of mixed, the current Pentastar
5th 0.83
Final Drive Ratio 3.06:1
Overall Top Gear 2.54

While the V8s 65RFE has ratios as above with
6th .67
Final Drive Ratio 3.47
Overall Top Gear 2.32

So the 8HP45 in a V-6 would probably have the .67 top gear and if it kept the 3.06 axle and have a 2.05 top gear. More likely it would get a 3.47 for more dig and still have a 2.33 top for a few less (8%) rpms at 70. Figure a 30.6" diameter tire for 684 revs per mile or 1859 rpm @ 70 instead of the current 2026. Might get another MPG from the EPA if it gets into 8th on the highway cycle and not need as much pedal to accelerate to spec.

Just a guess.

One of these is a diesel.

The 8-speed is likely to be a late or mid-year intro for the 2013 models. So you likely will not be able to order until Nov-Dec or later. The transmission is currently being used in the 2012 Charger. So visit a Dodge dealer and test-drive a 2012 Charger V6 AWD 8-speed if you want to see how they handle and shift.

I did, and went with the 2012 model GC rather than wait another year. The Charger is nice, but the trans does hunt a bit more than the 5-speed. I found it to get about 1 mpg better than the 2011 V6 5-speed models in the city and about the same on the highway. Best luck in your decision.

Just read that Ram pickups will be available this fall with Pentastar and 8-speed. No idea how that fact will impact on Grand Cherokee 8-speed availability.

Grand Cherokee was supposed to be the fist to get the 8 speed after the Chrysler 300.

The 8-speed transmissions are in "limited availablity" because they are currently being imported or produced at the ZF Greenville, SC plant until the US plant where they will eventually be manufactured is completed and up to speed. The $300M Kokomo plant addition and retooling to manufacture the 8-speed transmission started in February 2011, with planned completion by early 2013.

That is why for the 2012 model year, only certain Charger and 300 models are getting the transmission.

Even the new colors for the 2012 models were not available for order until November-December 2011- January 2012.

So take your chances and wait. Place your bets folks.

I kinda see what you are talking about. The plant will not be ready till 2013 so Chrysler rather build themselves than order imported $$$ more.I just wanted conformation of order date. If i was sure that 8 speed wouldn't be able to order when order Banks open in June for the 2013 than i would order now. Do you think they will make 2013 with V6 5 speed first then the 8 later in the MY ? I would kick myself if ordered now and then in June you can order the 8 speed.
PS this just in http://rumors.automobilemag.com/2013...ic-115547.html
