2012 Laredo Rads are WEAK !!

My wife complained that the heat in her GC wasn't working right. I checked the fluid, and it was pretty low. Topped off with distilled water, heated it up, and saw the rad was steaming. I was hoping it would be covered under the powertrain warranty, but no luck. Jeep wanted $750 to change it out.

So I got one with a lifetime warranty from my buddy at Advance commercial, and swapped it out myself. The pics show just how much you have to pull apart. There is a thin slit in the bottom row from a stone hit (look to the left of the fly, lol). I'm very surprised that this is so weak. I think one of the issues is that the very bottom edge of the rad is exposed from behind the A/C condensor. If you look at the one pic, that thin silver strip is the bottom 2 rows of the radiator. I'm gonna pick up some SS mesh to fit into this plastic grille space to provide some real protection. For this to happen within two years, I don't trust it to stay safe again for very long. I doubt the warranty will cover rock hits, and I don't want to waste another 5 hours in the garage on something so easily preventable. Of course, to be fair, some of that time was figuring out how to do it, so next time would be faster. And I also pulled my washer reservoir and cleaned my sensor. (see washer fluid sensor thread for that pic)

That doesn't look fun. Great job on DIY.

Thanks. One other thing I'd like to note, is that the replacement radiator had a core that was twice as thick. It didn't interfere with the installation, and it seems to be working fine. I just thought it was odd. My guess is the aftermarket company has one part number for both the V6 and V8, where Chrysler wanted to save money by making a thinner one for the V6.

Yes there are two radiators, the standard V6 and the V8 or V6 heavy duty cooling (in some trailer tow packages).

Ah, ok. Well I added a factory hitch setup, so it's probably good to have the extra capacity. I usually tow heavier stuff with my truck over the Jeep, but it's good to have a backup.
