They got the part in. it did not fix the problem. Still banging from D to R - comes and goes. They called STAR and we're told to order and replace the transfer case. Not sounding good but they are trying to fix it.

One other note - when in 4 LOW it is really bad so I'mthinking there is some merit in replacing the transfer case. Just curious - are all of the Jeeps here with the problem equipped with the 5.7 Hemi? Maybe this is a torque / power issue that is tearing up the transfer case

It does seem that its only a problem with the Hemi. Let's hope the transfer case replacement does the trick.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for keeping an eye on this.

I was hoping you might be able to answer a question for me...

I live in Vancouver Canada and the one dealer I spoke with did not seem to know what a star case number was - is this a US only system? and is there any way to cross reference it so that I can point them in the right direction? or should I be looking for a new service department

Another highly informed member of another Jeep site posted yesterday saying that there is a new TSB in the works for this but that at this time it only mentioned the 2012 Hemi and not the 2011's... have you heard anything about this at all?

Thanks again,

I'm pretty sure Canada uses DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT.

I had put in the vehicle as a 2011 WK with a 5.7 (since I had no VIN) and did a search for "11721933." I don't know if this is actually a STAR case number or not, but it brought up the info.

There is a service bulletin scheduled to be released 06/04/2012 that involves 2012 WD, DX, DJ, D2, DS, WK, DD - Drive to Neutral Shift Shock. I have not seen the final approved version, so I do not know if it is applicable in this situation. Also, just because something is scheduled to be released on a certain date doesn't mean it will.

___________________________________________
There is a Bulletin number: 18-015-12 that came out April 20, 2012.

SUBJECT:
Flash: Bump Or Harsh Shift Neutral to Drive And Avoid MIL Illumination For Any P0032, P0038, P0052, P0058, P0031, P0037, P0051, P0057
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves diagnosis and selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software or if necessary replacing the PCM based on the DIAGNOSIS. This new software once reprogrammed in the PCM will prevent the need to replace the PCM when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC's) listed below occur as a pair.
MODELS:
2011 (WD) Durango
2011 (WK) Grand Cherokee
NOTE: This Service Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine (Sales Code EZH).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a MIL illumination or a harsh shift from neutral to drive.

Got an update for everyone. Transfer case was ordered and replaced yesterday per STAR. Yes indeed the problem is gone! FIXED! Note when they had the case out they could feel the movement.

I also heard that several Hemi's taken to dealers in the San Francisco Bay Area have had the same issue and had to have the transfer case replaced.

Here's the parts list from the work order:

52119981-AA Valve Transmission
5010884-AA Sealer RTV 10
68055894-AA Fluid ATV + 4 10
52853664-AD Case NONE 21

Note the AD on the transfer case - could this be revision "D" ?

Anyway the noise is gone and the Jeep is back to normal.

Walnut Creek Chrysler - Jeep - Dodge - RAM are dialed in on the problem. They were great and stayed on the problem. Claudia kept me informed. Great service.

Hope this help.

Hello everyone HELP! Its back the banging sound - my neighbors were laughing as they could hear it accross the street - sounds like the drive line is about to fall out on the street - the fix lasted 9000 miles - this is become a joke - just had the left front CV boot and axle replaced, water pump and now after 9000 miles the new transfer case is banging. Not to mention my 2012 RAM goes back in on Tuesday so an area tech can look at a problem that the dealer can duplicate but can not fix. Two new vehicles over $100K and they are both falling apart. If someone is reading this from Chrysler I really need some help here.
