A three year knows about syncopatation? Knows how to counterpoint a phrygian dominant scale melody over a hungarian minor chord progression? Knows how to play Polyrhythm in 3/32 meter at 220bpm? A three year old knows the difference between a Am7diminished arpeggio and a C#Msus9 arpeggio?

There are melodies, patterns, and complexities to be realized and appreciated if enough time is spent soaking it all in.

Don't care to read through all this because I've already read a lot that i disagree with, and a lot I do. But I was reading about a band that a buddy of mine covers and he got me into a few years ago. If you like the heavy stuff and you have an appreciation for insanely good lyrics listen to this and then go read the lyrics and find the story behind it. Pretty deep stuff.

Well i would like to take this oppurtunity to formally apologize on behalf of my self, my province and my country for the plauge that is Nickleback! I know, I know we hate them too. As bad as they are though they pale in comparison to Rush THE ABSOLUTE WORST ####ING BAND OF ALL TIME! Everytime i hear any one of there songs i want to smash my hand with a hammer to distract me from the pain in my ears.

If you step into a cross-sub-genre like "progressive death metal", you find the elements of traditional death metal like heavy screaming and dark lyrics, and elements which are "progressive" or from a different genre. Bands like that may sing in one song, scream in another, or both in the same song. One example of that is Opeth. They have both heavy deep growling songs, and slow sad softly sung songs with acoustic guitar and piano, and some jazz influence. Opeth YouTube - Opeth - Isolation years
It seems the problem is not in our opinions, but in my understanding of the word "metal."
You see, when I think if metal, I think of crap like Slayer, and if I just randomly heard the song you posted, I don't know what I'd call it, but I wouldn't label it "metal."
But this is why labels suck, they just lead to confusion. Down with labels! Down with nouns!

"You're out of your mind."
"That's between me and my mind."

You guys sound so old in this thread... reminds me of the idea portrayed in the 70's of all the seniors complaining about "that dam rock and roll".
