If you don't have a full frame camera available (see? A great chance to justify the D700 ) you could go with the Nikon fisheye.Amazon.com: Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX Fisheye Nikkor Lens: Electronics A friend of mine recently found one in pristine condition for her D80, and she got it for $300 Obviously on telephoto lenses, DX is your friend - but the downside is that wide angle lenses lose a lot in the translation. Maybe pick up an FM10 body for cheap to use for wheeling wide angles? If 12mm isn't wide enough, you're going to have to spend some serious coin unless you go with something like the fisheye. I feel your pain - I don't have anything in the kit below 17mm . Fortunately I don't shoot much in the way of landscapes or large group shots, so DX works in my favor.http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-10-24mm-3-5-4-5G-Nikkor-Digital/dp/B0026FCKC8/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t is another possibility, although I have no personal experience with that lens.

i know im not nikon but i just picked up the canon 10-22, love it! but i know the sigma 10-20 3.5-4.6 (IIRC) is a really respectable lens, especially with what you pay for it. then tokina has a 12-24 2.8 or something that is supposedly ubber sharp. those are the 2 i was contemplating but in the end decided to go with canon. i dont think i would have been disappointed with any of them though.
