Served in Alameda, CA just before it closed...and did a WestPac 1994 to the Persian Gulf.

Current ride: A YJ-7 doing asphalt duty while I try to find time to wheel.

You ain't kidding...and you probably know what you guys get called once we're away from the window.

I had it twice as bad..the DKs would screw up and it was at MY counter they were bellyaching.

If the PN's and YN's didn't get the paperwork messed up, the DK's wouldn't pay incorrectly

Did you go to A school in Meridian, MS? I was there in 89 for 3 months.

I have to tell you what a trip that was having a Captain or Commander come to your desk (as an E1) to have you help him/her with thier pay. It took me awhile to get used to that.

Oh, yeah - did my time at Meridian. Fall 1991...over into the first week of December, then off to San Diego to my first ship, the CORONADO. Meridian was actually all-right, except for the overheated classrooms...I guess it was to simulate the inside of a ship.

Only time we PNs had an officer at the gate was when a golden-boy got told 'NO' and he was getting his sponsor involved. Or if the XO was fuggin' with us - which happened at times...

When I took TAD to the Public-Affairs office on the VINSON I had to re-learn how to deal with officers, since in that capacity they worked with us, all the time, cooperatively.

When I was at Meridian they posted the orders on the back of the classroom door and we got to pick them by class rank. This one guy finished one ahead of me which would have given him order to VP-50 (a P3 Orion Sub Killer Squadron out of Moffett Field in Northern CA). I would have ended up in with 4 years on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The guy was kind of a jerk so I ask him if he knew what a P3 was and he said no. I grew up just outside of an ANG Base that flew P3's so I knew exactly what there were. I told him they were brown water patrol boats and that I bet 4 years on them would be tough. I offered to trade since I told him I grew up on a lake and liked small boats, he agreed.

Long story short. I knew P3's were too big to go on a carrier, but that they also deployed for 6 months at a time. My first tour was all sea duty although I never saw a ship

West PAC to the PI and another West PAC to Adak Alaska. Saw China, Japan, Guam, and Hawaii along the way and flew there.

I know it seems like I screwed over a shipmate, but believe me the guy was a jerk and everyone thought it was funny.

Welcome to the Navy, AM is the way to go.
I am a AM1(AW) currently stationed at AIMD NAS Brunswick. I have only been P-3's. I got stuck there out of A School back in 97. Detailer would not let me go anywhere but back to P-3 after AIMD. I am not going to complain, PER DIEM kicks ***. 8 Years this Month, E7 in the near future, I hope. Took test early, and made board. So I guess I am #22
