I spent my fair share of time at Great Mistakes (late Nov through June '84) while going to FT/FC A school. It sucked & I promissed myself when I left that I'd never come back - so far I've kept my promise.
Its my son Jerry who's going - not me. I retired in '04.
From what I understand, AMH's can volunteer to be part of an aircrew (be aboard the aircraft when its flying and not always ground crew), but I don't know when the opportunity to volunteer takes place.
was there from Jan to Sep 82...boot camp & FT school...Lordy, that was a long time ago...
I did get to shoot a SM 2 at a drone at the drone range at rosie roads ...quite a rush!
If he is off to Pensacola FL, He is gonna like it there.

A little info about the AM world. The AM's in squadron life hate it becuase of all the inspections that have to be completed for so many flight hours and so many days. Me being a AME it is nowhere as bad. A lot less stuff to work on. Just the air conditiong for the jet and the ejections seats. Now when AM's are at AIMD they do a lot less work and are a lot more layed back. Either way i hope he enjoys it. If you or your son has anything about the aviation life of the USN feel free to ask.
