Bergdahl released, in US custody!

U.S. officials say the only American soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is in U.S. custody.

The officials say Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's release was part of a negotiation that includes the release of five Afghan detainees held in the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The negotiation between the U.S. and the Taliban was mediated by the government of Qatar.

The 28-year-old Berghdal had been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009. The officials say he is in good condition and able to walk.

The officials insisted on anonymity in order to describe the details on Bergdahl's release.

Follow-on story:

Finally, a decision was made in the beginning of this week that 2,232 American dead, 20,000 civilian dead, and $10 million an hour for 13 years was enough blood and treasure to spend on the war in Afghanistan. President Obama made that decision, and their remained many loose ends when he announced it. One of them, amazingly and thankfully, was resolved just days later:
The lone American prisoner of war from the Afghan conflict, captured by insurgents nearly five years ago, has been released to American forces in exchange for five Taliban prisoners held at the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility, Obama administration officials said Saturday.
The soldier, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, was handed over to American Special Operations forces inside Afghanistan about 10:30 a.m. Saturday by a group of 19 Taliban, officials said.
American officials said that Sergeant Bergdahl was in good condition and able to walk.
The breakthrough gave Obama an opportunity to remind America about one thing that unites us, Democrat or Republican, supporter of the post-9/11 wars or not: "Sergeant Bergdahl's recovery is a reminder of America's unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield." Now it is up to all of us to make sure his welcome lasts more than the breathless news stories about his release. He, like all veterans, deserves better medical care than too many of them are receiving right now from the VA. He, like all veterans, needs more help in rejoining society after this long war. But the important part, of course, is that he's coming home, finally.

While I think it is a good thing he is no longer in Taliban custody, he is a deserter who freely left his post and fob. He should not receive a hero's welcome home.

I agree 100%. Hopefully he faces the same punishment anyone else would for being a deserter.

Great so now POTUS negotiates with terrorists and frees five high ranking officials for one soldier who deserted as a PFC?

Great set the precedent that if they take one of ours we give them five back.

Great timing too, right during the VA hospital scandal, yea ignore the VA stuff people bc we take care of our soldiers, see we got Bowe home.

Supposedly, he was promoted twice while missing. I'll wait for the Army's inevitable investigation.

I'll also wait to see if Qatar keeps their side of the "bargain".

That's traditional for POWs to get promoted along with their peers while captive.

Of course, it's also traditional for returned POWs to shave their nasty beards and put on the uniform of their country upon return, and not look the part of a stinkin' mujahadeen...

What I don't get is why the exchange went the way it did, special forces met with what was it 12-18 Insurgents?

Once bowe was exchanged and in the Helicopter an apache should have turned around and roasted them. I mean we've got a group of people who participated on holding an American captive and we watch them walk away.

As long as I live and as long as I am a soldier I can understand the fighting side of war but I don't think I will ever understand the political side.
