The wrench display is a warning lamp for a park assist concern.

That explains why it seemed to come on in inclement weather- parking sensors must have been covered with snow.

Thanks for the answer!

Hmmm, very interesting. I had a snow/ice issue this winter as well, but all I got was a text warning in the EVIC display. They must of changed something between 2010 and 2012.

I don't have the EVIC so maybe that's why I get the symbol?

So, since I don't think my Liberty has park assist, I have to ask: what is it?

It is a set of sensors on the rear bumper alerting you when you are near something backing up. Many vehicles have it. If you see little round "buttons" on the rear bumper of a car or truck, that most likely is park assist of some sort.

Aha! This light has come on for me a few times and could never figure out what it was. Looking back, it is not surprising that these times were during the snowy winter months when those sensors could have been covered. Seems kind of odd that an explanation for this silly little light wouldn't be in the owner's manual

Well it turns out this issue isn't strictly winter related. The back of my Jeep is a little dusty right now and the light has been going on and off all day.
