Towing capacity...

So when i was at one of the local dealers they told me that all the libertys have a 5000 lb towing capacity. Is this true or is this only with the trailer tow class III group option? The trailer tow class option says that it comes with a heavy duty engine cooler, heavy duty power steering cooling and trailer sway control. So im assuming that the without this package that its not rated for the same weight? Or do all the libertys have this thing and i just need to add the hitch?

It may be different for later year models but this is the case for 2008 KK:
class II hitch, 2,000lb
class III w/ towing package and manual transmission, 3,500lb
class III w/ towing package and auto transmission 5,000lb

Looks like 5,000lbs with a class III every where I look. I plan to put one on, probably will never tow more than about 3,500lbs but good to know.

Keep in mind, just because the hitch is rated for 5,000 pounds, does not mean that the Liberty is rated for towing the 5,000 pounds with out the brake controller, sway control, added coolers and so on.

to have the 5,000 lb tow capacity you need the factory tow package which includes the hitch, wiring harness, electronic brake/sway control, full size spare tire, and 'heavy duty' cooling system; my '11 Liberty KK has this package

my heep weights in around 4000lbs... with the 2.5 and 36's. most trailers weigh around 12-1500lbs empty... so your probably over... the uhaul trailers are lightweight, but no electric brakes.... so basically no.

I wouldn't pull anything heavy without the actual trailer package installed. It's an option on the Jeep site (I bought my Liberty used) for new vehicles. You could just add a hitch and pull something light (like maybe a personal water craft/jet ski trailer) but I wouldn't do any real hauling without at least the trans cooler installed. The only cooling system an auto trans has is in it's trans fluid - if that gets too hot you'll overheat the transmission and somethings going to get damaged.

I wouldn't do it, could turn out to be a case of the tail wagging the dog...not a good thing.

When U-Haul says that they can install a 5000 pound hitch and light wiring for about $300, is that just the hitch or does that include the tow package? I'm not sure if my capacity is 2000 or 5000 and not sure if I have to take it to the dealer to have the 5000 package installed.

That will be just the hitch and wiring for a four prong trailer light connection. It will not include a brake controller or the wiring to install a brake controller.
This will no raise your towing limits up to the 5,ooo pound tow rating.

The hitch itself ir rated for 5000 they put on. Your vehicle is not. I am pretty sure that you can have to tow package added after the fact. It is a factory option. The dealership can install the factory hitch and light harness but not sure about the anti sway or the cooler.
