Talk me into (or out of) a KK

Hey there everyone! So me and the wife have been throwing around the idea of trading in her kia sportage for something else. We've bounced around a few ideas but we both like the Jeep Liberty. We're looking to spend in the $15-$19 range which around here looks like a 2012 falls comfortable in the price bracket.

Things we like so far - Towing capacity (would like to be able to tow a small camper, like a popup maybe). Cargo room, 4X4, It's a JEEP!

What we don't like so far - MPGs (we get 26-28 with the kia, but my wife's new job won't require her to travel 200+ miles a week anymore)

So what other considerations are there, what are you guys thoughts on this vehicle. We have 2 kids and dogs, would need it to tow a small utility trailer (for going to the dump and things like that). Really the only thing I'm hung up on so far is the possibility that it's going to get 15mpg regularly which is about 10mpg less than we're used to. I get like 8 in my YJ though...haha

2012 liberty

For the things you said about what you need in a suv the liberty would be a good thing. But yes the mileage is bad, mine likes to eat a lot of 20 dollar billls. But if you can get over the gas mileage, the liberty would be a great vehicle for your needs.

I get about 15 mpg now but it's because I have larger tires than stock, a 4 inch lift, a bunch of heavy armor, and a roof basket that kills my aerodynamics. When my KK was stock, I could get 23.7 regularly on long trips to the Midwest. Here is a link to my fully records so you can see my long mpg history (lifted since spring 2013).

You can also look up summary real world mpg's for any vehicle model on the fully website. I love my Liberty and would highly recommend it. Cheers, --LFH

You can get good mileage like that^ or you can get garbage like mine lol. Stock, I was getting 20 on pure interstate runs. Realistically my commute got 16-17ish. That's 70 miles a day 95% highway. Now with the 3.5" lift and bigger tires I see anywhere from 13-15 on the highway. Lately been averaging 12-14mpg.

You'll have the room for 4 plus cargo and you can get a dog in the back too. With the tow package you can tow up to 5k lbs. You could look for a skyslider model, that's the soft top that opens the length of the Jeep. Might keep the wife from wanting to drive the YJ

The cool factor of the liberty far outweighs any joy you get from the higher MPG vehicles. Resist the big tire urge and 16+ mpg combined (20+ hwy) is worth it for all your other wishes to be realized.

If you want to spend the top end of your budget you can get some nice features as well.

My 09 is on the other end but I love it and wouldn't drive any other vehicle.

Cool, thanks guys. We're still deciding what we want to do. Thinking of going to test drive one this week though. The local Jeep dealer has a couple of 2012's and a 2011.

The 11's and 12's have nice interior (darker color). Don't hesitate to ask us questions about it like the engine, transmission, and transfer case.
Also, note what trim level it is, Sport, Limited, Jet, Arctic, etc. It'll be a much more comfortable ride with the 16 inch rims.

Welcome to the forum, as what was said earlier ask questions, see if the dealer will offer a warranty should you decide to purchase one. Also have a mechanic separate from the dealer do a thorough check of the vehicle. Some thing to keep in mind spark plugs need replacement every 30k copper ones only, springs and shocks may or may not make it to 80k as well as tires. Some forum members that replaced them much earlier noticed big differences.
Lastly, Kia now part of Hyundai has gotten much better in producing a quality vehicle but IMOP the Lib is a much more solid vehicle there is more steel around you hence why it is so much heavier. However, it is one of the reasons why the Mpgs suffer.
Good luck in your search it's nice that you have 1 jeep in the family already.

When you get knee-deep in a situation, floor it.

2011 was the interior redesign. Some things changed, some equipment became standard, and the black/gray color was more prominent. I personally prefer the redesign.

Poncherello did bring up a good point on suspension. I had a blown rear shock at 28K miles. I knew it was blown before that mark though, I just didn't care. I had a lift already ordered and waiting to be installed lol.

Just keep in mind, it is a Jeep. The urge to mod will be strong especially when you already own a modded Jeep lol. They do look good when modded though

+1. I love my Liberty's, both of them. My 02 Sport is what made me buy 2011 Sport.

I have an '11 and my mileage in the summer averages around 17 (mostly non-highway driving) and on trips with a loaded down vehicle up to New Hampshire I can get 20mpg. This winter I'm happy to get 15mpg - winter gas plus 4X4 in the snow stinks. As far a a fun vehicle I love it. It's the first vehicle that's been fun without being a convertible. I like trying to take it places that most other vehicles can't go and, other than a Wrangler, I think it's probably the best bang for the buck when fun is also factored in. I say go for it!

@Skydmark1 - This is my first Jeep and I would not swop her for the world!! Comfortable, Safe, more than enough space for kids, dogs and Granny, can go any-where,..... So what if she uses a bit more gas than a pavement SUV, she is a JEEP - do youself a very big favour... BUY IT!!
