Runs in park, dies in gear
First let me apologize upfront for this completely non-technical terminology, automotive ignorant post. My automotive knowledge is very limited and I need help.....please. Today I was driving home and my Jeep was hesitating when accelerating and running rough at an idle. I made it up onto the freeway and it started making a loud noise when I accelerated and then the warning light for the transmission temperature came on. I exited the freeway and turned it off. I looked it up in the manual and did what that said, I turned the car on, put it in neutral and let it idle and the light went off. However, when I put the car into reverse it was still making an almost droning engine noise. The noise stopped in park and neutral. I put the car in drive and got the same sound. So I am deducing from my very limited knowledge (most likely incorrectly) that there is a problem with the transmission. I turned the car off and walked to Wienershnitzel not sure what to do. I read some stuff online and I think it may have been running in a safe mode. However, when I returned and started it again (still runs fine in park and neutral) and shifted into reverse the engine died. Fired it up again and tried shifting into drive and the engine died. Please help....has anyone else experienced this? Do you know what it is and if yes were you able to fix it? I have left it in a parking lot but trying to figure out how I can get it home. I've read a couple of posts that the transmission fluid could be low or the engine to transmission bolts could be loose? Again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge and thank you if you have any ideas and choose to take the time to respond.
