Hi Guys/Gals, I’m new here. I spent about 20 min entering my Jeep history and equipment, then found I’d been logged out and my entries were lost. Guess I should’ve composed some of it on Word first, then pasted it, no?
Anyway, my first post/thread here is about the relatively rare full-time selectable four-wheel drive option available on the KK. I personally wanted it on my near-new Liberty (new delivery March, 2013). I like being able to leave “it” in 4WD while I’m driving on alternating wet and dry pavement.
What’s your experience, opinions, forum questions on it?
Thanks, tjkj2002. Guess I wasn't clear that I did get it on my Liberty. When I was looking online for the new Liberty over several months I could hardly find the Selec Trac II, so it seemed kind of rare to me. Just wondered what people here think/have experience about it.
Yes, brunolambert. Seems like with part-time 4WD in intermittent wet-snowy-icy weather, you have less traction just when you need more traction! Disclaimer: I'm not saying full-time 4WD is magic--you still have to use good sense in slippery conditions.
I feel like this was big a few years ago, the whole select-trac vs command-trac debate. I personally would think that command-trac, being a true part-time 4wd, is better for wheeling as both front and rear are locked. I think select-trac is better for the dd as it has more of a select it and go kind of feel. Probably better for trail rides as you can hit harder surfaces that might not allow the slip needed by command-trac.
My personal feelings on selec-trac/full-time/ AWD is that its mostly a sales gimmick to sell the "safety/peace of mind" aspect of 4WD to a segment of the buying public that would not normally buy a "4x4".
Just smart business that rakes in the bucks that allow companies to continue to offer us enthusiasts real competent, yet low volume, machines.
Having driven a KK with command on the hwy in the pouring down rain and a KK with selec in the same scenario, I liked the feel of the selec trac ii better. I put them through their paces and got them to hydroplane etc and selec trac made a huge difference. I could feel it straightening things out without me having to do anything. It's a solid system.
Don't know about off road. But my selec trac ii has gotten me into some crazy places, and has come out of some crazy mud that I thought I was gonna need recovery gear for on more than one occasion. And it drives like a dream when there's snow on the mountains. I'd trust it to take me anywhere any other stock jeep would go.
I'm not sure I would be driving CT in 4WD in the rain. It's meant for snow covered, icy or dirt roads and offroad. You would probably get adverse effects in the rain
Agreed with almost everyone on here. The select-trac is amazing for snowy roads that are changing from snow, ice, wet pavement, dry payment, and back again. Just a set it and forget it kind of feature. (knocking on wood as i type this) but i have yet to lose control up here. I may slip for a second, but the system brings everything right back while driving. Of Course, a lot of it is in the way you drive and stopping is a whole other issue which is strictly based on the tires themselves.

Stated another way for me, SelecTrac is probably the best $450 extra I've ever spent.
