Finally got some time today to work on the installation of the ome 927 and 731 springs. Also using KYB shocks, I didn't find many people using these to get a review so I decided to test them myself. If I am not happy I will put in a tried and tested shock set.
Ran into an issue right off the bat with my spring compressors. I completely destroyed my spring compressors trying to compress the 927 springs onto the KYB stock length shocks. Did i misread something somewhere? In my research I was sure I read that stock length shocks for the front were acceptable. Am I wrong? Or just need some beefier spring compressors?
Those type of spring compressors are junk, take them to a shop and have them done, your head will appreciate it trust me. You're trying to compress 400 lb springs, not designed for such
Good luck with the KYBs by the way
Finished the lift today. I ended up putting two of the conduit nut clevis spacers in the front on each side. Also welded on a stud bolt to attach the hockey puck bump stops in the rear. Other than not having the proper tool for the front springs this was an ok install. Will be taking it in for an alignment hopefully wednesday. On with the pics!
I have the same year and color as you. Eventually would like to do the same amount of lift. Did you measure to see how much height you gained front and rear?
New shoes and alignment. Cooper discoverer A/T3 245/75 16. Should have gone wider not thrilled with the fill but looks darn good and no rub when flexed so I am good for now.
I don't have measurements stock. But as it sits now the measured from the ground to the bottom center of the fender is 35.5 front and 35" rear.
This is exactly what I used and where I made the purchase. Along with 2 conduit spacers on each side in the front. If I had it again 1 on each side would be have been plenty. Use the KYB's at your own guidance. I used them against other peoples opinion and so far in my opinion they are completely fine. The transformation in ride quality notably handling/cornering is remarkable.
Off road has nothing to do with it, potholes/ railroad tracks every day wear and tear is as hard on shocks as most put offroading.
Should always match quality shocks with quality springs
Saving a nickle today may cost a dime tomorrow
CONDUIT NUT , not spacer, get them in the electrical area of the hardware store, they go between the bottom of the shock and the clevis in front, 3 per side for 3/4 inch lift
Looks great man! I traded my 2011 KK in for a new JK Rubicon. But this was exactly what I wanted to do to the KK if I would have kept it. Looks really good.
Yeah man, KYB! Everyone knows the best offroad components come from Japan! Seriously though, why didn't you spend a few extra bucks and get OME or Ironman shocks? What did you use in the rear? Stock length does not work... I feel like mean ole' Tom saying that but for real
Liberty sits at 51k miles. So, that's about 20k on these kyb's. Shocks are completely fine with many more miles ahead for them. Hell of a lot better than the stock suspension body roll.
Tommudd is wrong about these shocks along with the other naysayers. My wife has been daily driving it for the last 15k miles or so. Trust me, if they weren't fine she would have complained about it already.
Bilsteins are probably a better shock for this vehicle but the KYB's haven't shown any signs of being a bad choice either. So, there you go. You guys can make your own decisions on what you want to do with your money but this is what I did and we are still happy 20k miles later. :cheers2:

Most any shock will last 20,000, even the cheap ones Rustys provide last about that length of time. I ran my first lift 100,000 miles then installed it on a friends, no issues. So report back at say, ...well 65,000
Just like to provide as much information as possible.
Some had tried those shocks back 6-8 years ago and upgraded to OME etc, so just wanting to make everyone aware
