Yes wider tire is better for driving over sand. More contact is better.
Still deciding and checking, 255/70 are ~10mm (~1/2 inch) shorter.
I won't be doing any rock crawling until I get full skid package including rails but looking forward to. In the meantime, I'm making regular trips on the beach in soft, deep sand. I think I'll go with the 245/75s for a little more clearance and air down if needed.

Trust me, lift is needed if nothing else a better ride and handling and also to have some flex room. Silly to have tires that have so little room if a rock gets in the tread it rubs.

235/70/16 are in my opinion the best size for all applications without lift....
