Loud knock

Hi guys,
I have an '09 Liberty which has been well looked after, religious oil changes, maint. etc; all the sudden, when I fired it up the other day, it began to make what sounded like a knocking sound. It actually kinda sounds like something is slapping or striking the plate that covers the valves. The engine light is on, but no codes are appearing on the odometer when checked. It's going to the mechanic tomorrow, but I was hoping someone might be able to give me an idea of what it might be... It's very loud the noise, you can hear it outside the vehicle with the hood closed and it increases in rapidity when the throttle is pressed.. when idling it is constant, clunking every 2-3 seconds...

I just hope to hell I dont have bad rod bearings.. i really cant afford a tear-down..

How many miles on it?
Haven't heard an issue like this on a KK yet.
Maybe a KJ owner will be able to give ya some suggestions of what it might be. Knowing what the check engine light was for would be a big step.

OME lift
Hypertech Max Energy
CAI, Gibson exhaust, 4.7L throttle body
