It seems to me that Jeep already makes this vehicle.

The Compass: (and it's no Liberty)

It sounds like its going to be a direct shot at the compass/patriot. Why would they want to do that???

The project engineer I talked to said it was a completely different style than the Compass or Patriot... cuz I was thinking the same thing when he said it was going to be a car-based platform.

Regardless of whether they're building another Compass or Patriot or not, based on the pic of that unibody in the factory - I don't see how they could call it a Jeep Liberty.

Just because it's using the Dart platform doesn't mean that it will be Dart sized. Heck the Dart is based on the Giulietta platform and it's actually a midsize vehicle! (According to EPA passenger volume...)

Still if its based on a car platform it'll be a lot like the compass regardless of the size. Performance wise that is. Drove a compass before I bought the liberty. These two are definitely not in the same class. Just because u make a car sit a little higher and add all wheel drive it does not make it a 4x4 vehicle. Complete different driving dynamic let alone the offroad capability. Liberty just feels like a Jeep!

French engineering is an oxymoron. The frogs are even more inept than the limeys when it comes to building quality machines. I'd rather have my manhood flattened with a large wooden mallet than own the POS in that pic.

The Cherokee people said the same thing about the Liberty. I say we all hold on to see what they come up with... this platform is being forced down their throats, not much they can do. I will say this, the Jeep engineers are doing the best they can with it.

Who knows what we might end up with. Will it suck? Will it not be so bad? Will it rock?

We'll find out in about a year or so.

I once owned a Citroen Ami 6, which was an upscale 2cv. It sort of looked like a small rowboat turned upside down. Anyhow, this two cylinder beast once managed to fit 8 guys in it, driving on the side of a 45 degree embankment at 40 mph. Sure it looked like hell, but it was very dependable until it got 50000 miles on it, blew the clutch, then threw a rod a couple of weeks later! So don't make fun of French cars.

I thought that AMC already tried that experiment with the AMC Eagle. It would seem that Chrysler would kind of take notice of this. Some outfits never learn.

If Fiat decides to make the next Liberty as an AWD not a 4WD, the one place I won't have to worry about seeing it, would be the beach. When applying for an off-road permit the vehicle must have 4wd, an awd vehicle will be declined.

hmm.., then again who would ever buy a Jeep thinking they could drive around on the beach with it .., LOL!
