KK CB Install: Write up

Over the weekend I took advantage of visiting my dad to use his garage for my CB install. I documented the install which I think went really well to help others that like me were struggling to figure out a place to put a CB in the Liberty.
1. What you need (or I guess what I used).
Cobra 75WXST CB Radio
Firestik 18í Coax
Firestik 3í antenna
SWR meter with 3í lead coax
Antenna quick detach

Also pictured below hanging up to dry: Part of the Vertical Door Jam mount (purchased like many of the other components from the Walcott CB linked below. FYI: Excellent customer service!) I painted it black even though it was stainless steel so it looked more finished and blended in with my black Jeep.

You donít need a 1979 Honda Cafť Race undergoing a full restoration but it helps!

2. Running the Coax:
Here I removed the tail light and ran the cable in through one of the 2 vents you can see. I then fished it through the inside molding all the way along the fender, down the door jams and up under the glove box and into the center council.

Coming out by the back seat after going over the rear right wheel well

You canít see any wires from the time it goes behind the tail light until the CB cord comes out from under the dash. With the Coax run I moved on to mounting the CB control box.
3. Mounting the cord junction box and hooking up the power source: The Cobra 75 is awesome, all you have to do is mount the little plug junction somewhere. Well if you have ever pulled up you center council around the shifter then you know there is a ton of room in there. Plus I could easily run the DC power off the cigarette lighter that turns off with the ignition!

4. Installing the antenna mount: Just above the tail light it is flat enough to put in 3 of the 4 screws which are very heavy duty! I had to pre-drill but they went in great.

Here it is with the door closed and the antenna up:

The 3 footer doesnít stick up too high.

5. Tuning the antenna: I forgot to get photos but I used the SWR to tune it in and then replaced the center council. Hereís all you see of the CB wires coming out from under the dash:

Plus now if I stick my 4 foot antenna on I can access the box to tune it in 5 seconds by removing the center council and I donít have to crawl upside down to look under the dash.
6. The final product: I screwed the Mic hanging bracket to the right of my steering wheel and I am in business.

(Wally the eagle keeps an eye out for terrorists)
7. Testing. I drove 350 miles from Ohio to DC yesterday and seemed to get decent reception. What amazed me is how freaking loud the little handheld CBís speaker is. If you need an external speaker for this you must be deaf or in a convertible doing 75 with the top down!
All in all I am very happy. I hope this helped some of you.

Excellent write up and photos. Where did you buy your antenna mount and what was the cost if you don't mind?

Click on the link below the first picture and it will take you to it. It was $20.95 and is very solidly built and adjustible.

Great job, thats the way it should be done, just acouple of suggestions on the antenna mount, weather seal your connector and put a drip loop on your coax by the tail light.

Nice job! Thats awesome! I have Uniden Pro640e 120 channel CB which is like the Jaguar E type of the cb world. It has a lot of nice options like usb & lsb hi-cut filter, mic gain, but the darn display lights keep burning out. I have a K-40 antenna, which you need no swr because it's unbelevable. I 've used them before and it comes out near perfect. Don't know if I want my Jeep to look like an oversized R/C car yet. LOL.But maybe someday soon.

Great job looks great!

Just ordered my gear :)

Sagerist 06-20-2012 12:13 PM

ordered mine too! I found a brand new CB in the box in my fiance's grandparents garage, so then i went out and got the cabling, antenna, and mounts. Should be here friday! only 2ft stik as well since i have to park the jeep in a garage at work, it would get destroyed smacking everything even with the spring on it.
