I'm a newbie--what's the blinking red light in my dash after I lock the doors?

Hey all, I just got a 4x4 Liberty (when I say "just got," I mean I picked it up yesterday morning--love it so far). I'm wondering what the blinking red dot between the odometer and speedometer is--I just noticed it tonight, and it only does it after you've shut and locked the door. Is this the security system or something? I looked in the user's manual but didn't see anything. I probably just missed it, but I thought I'd ask on here. Any help appreciated!

It is in fact the light for the security alarm.

It is the security light. It will blink fast for the 1st 30 seconds or so, then blink slowly. On mine if you use the key to unlock the door it doesn't disable the alarm. You must use the key transponder.

I think that it's just the way it works. Wife's 08 is the same.
On my old buick the key lock would arm/disarm the alarm.

But, That can't be, What if the batteries died in the remote and the only way in the Jeep is through using the key cylinder. then the alarm sets off and then you are trying to start the vehicle while the alarm is still going off?? doesn't seem correct to me.

Yeah I was wondering about that too--when your keypad battery dies what are you supposed to do, just set the alarm off every time you open the door until you get it fixed?

Pretty much. As soon as the vehicle is started, it will recognize the key and shut the alarm off.

Everything described in this thread is normal operation except I think the alarm light only blinks for 15 or so seconds, not 30.
