Dodge Nitro or Jeep Liberty to be axed by 2012

This maybe old news, but I say axe the nitro. Chrysler killed the Commander to make way for the Patriot and compass. Now snuff one out of dodge line up.

Simple: Chrysler is in the auto business to make money. At the end of each fiscal year chrysler should look at each Jeep and dodge models and which didn't meet its sale quota, gets axed I like the nitro, but like an NFL coach, if you got to go, you gotta go

Continuing its cost-cutting moves to bring profits into greener territory, Chrysler LLC has decided to cancel either the Dodge Nitro or Jeep Liberty SUV by the end of 2012. Slashing production of either SUV, both built on the same base and nearly the same vehicle under different badges, will save Chrysler on development and marketing costs. Since the vehicles are within the same market segment, cutting one will eliminate a market competitor.

Chrysler's North American sales chief Steve Landry confirmed the melding to "one branded body" for the Nitro and Liberty: "As we move toward 2012, we don't have this dual branding of products and duplicating products."

The Liberty SUV was introduced in 2002, with a major restyling for 2008, and the Nitro was introduced in November 2006. Sales of the Liberty through August 2008 stood at 49,330 units, while Nitro sales were at 27,540. The figures are down 21% and 44% compared with 2007 figures, respectively.

Stephanie Brinley, a product analyst at AutoPacific Inc. in Southfield, Michigan, says Chrysler is most likely to eliminate the Nitro: "The Jeep Liberty has far more heritage than the Nitro. The Nitro doesn't really do enough for the Dodge brand."

Love the fake side vents, 4.0L engine and cargo pull out boot.

Dislike: The dual exhaust. It is essentially a single exhaust pipe split into two mufflers.

I'm not being bias for Jeep, but I do like the Liberty better. It just needs the Pentastar in it. If I was going to spend $30k again on a Jeep, it would be another Liberty Limited.

There the same vehicle but the Nirto get's the crappy 4.0 option and no low range 4wd.Not that it matters but both will be gone by '13/'14 from what I have seen.

That's what my dealer told me he's been told: 2013 will be Liberty's last year.

The Cherokee and Wrangler is Jeep's bread and butter. The Patriot or the compass will be gone buy then too

The next Jeep Liberty will use the same key dimensions as new D class (midsized) cars in 2013. The Liberty could be a “real Jeep” that just shares key dimensions with mid-sized cars and crossovers (but this is apparently not as likely as a version that is not quite as off road capable, though still Trail Rated — as Compass and Patriot can be). The Nitro is not expected to continue

my choice in a truck is ford, if someone gave me a new dodge i'd trade it in on a used ford, thats just me, as for jeep i just bought a new 2010 libby, i just love jeeps. the wife has a pt cruiser which is cool. i hate the thought of the liberty being cut in 13. also i thought fiat was buying jeep?? anyway just my 2 cents.

Not sure if the Liberty will be discontinued. I keep hearing different things? I have always owned various 4 wheel drive vehicles (with real 4LO t-cases and off-road ability) and 5,000lbs towing capacity. Must have those 2 things.

I dont think they are going to base it off some Fiat model, I think it is going to stay true to the Jeep heriatage just completely redone with something to get better mpg out of it.

Not sure on Jeep and Fiat alone but Fiat bought a 35% stake or something like in Crysler a few years ago. So they don't really "own" C, J, or D but have a bit of say I guess over things. It was more of an alliance.
