Custom Roof Basket w/ Off Road Lights

Has anyone tried to build a custom roof basket before? I've seen a few threads around about using steel conduit to be the frame. Any one have experience with this? I already have Yakima Cross Bars but the Yakima (and all other after market baskets I've seen) are so shallow that it puts the off road lights a foot or so back from the windshield!!

I'm thinking it might be better to have where the base of the frame comes out past the basket to be able to support 4 lights right at the edge or something like that.

Any thoughts?

I'm also in the market for a basket. If you do it post a pic and let us know the cost. A lot of the ones I've looked at High in price for what you get.

Thule makes a nice rack, but I am kind of leaning towards the Yakima Mega Load Warrior with extension bars.

That's what I was looking at too. But at that price I really think I could fab a better one already with light tabs

I have the defender rack which mounts to the factory roof rails. I like the fact the it is lower profile than the Yakima or other baskets because it doesn't need cross bars to be mounted to the roof. I don't notice any significant difference in wind noise (it's not like the box shape of the KK is aerodynamic to begin with)

Do they work with the skyslider? I would like to add some lights to mine. The basket would come in handy at times too.

I don't think you would be able to open the sky slider with the basket mounted since it is so close to the roof.

I would not need it on there all the time, just when I am traveling. But I am not sure how long I am going to have this Jeep. My wife to be wants me to upgrade to a 4-door Wrangler in the future.
