08 rusted axle nut madness!! :-0

This is a first for me. I've taken stock axles out of 92 Civics that weren't even this bad. I'm kind of curious though what caused this. It's an '08!!!

And what it looked like when I got done.

Sucked to have to replace the axles too when I was just trying to do the wheel bearings.

HOLY RUST! salt from the roads maybe?

TurboGoKart 02-19-2013 08:21 PM

I have no idea. It looks more like it was SOAKING in saltwater. And for far more than 4-5yrs. Jeep has 95k on the clock now, I'd aaaalmost begin to think those are stock, but at the same time, I think it'd be really hard for axles to last 95k miles.

I could pick that rust off the axle threads with my thumbnail.

Where did it come from, east coast somewhere or Florida??
Mine doesn't look that bad with 181,000 on it
haven't seen any KJs even 02/03s look that bad
Also CVs/ Axles can last that long, my left side is STOCK never been out except when I swapped front diffs to 4.10s

TurboGoKart 02-19-2013 11:28 PM

I dont know where it came from. I'll have to see if I can dig up the Carfax. Yeah this is a new one on me too. I've never ever seen an axle/axle nut this bad, LET ALONE an 08!!!! Lol. It almost seems as if the metal was never coated with anything. Who knows. I have new wheels bearings and axles ready to go in, so we'll see what happens in the next 10yrs! Hahaha.

Looks as if someone took it through salt water out here on the East coast. Saltwater just eats metal away in no time. If you go for a dip in saltwater, you better find a buyer within the next 6-8 months tops lol

Why would anyone drive down a salt-water boat launch with the front of the car facing the water? One answer might be a parked car with rising salt water from the NY/NJ flood area. I bet the insides of the rocker panels are shot too.

Looks like we should all "paint" our nuts with oil or grease once a year. WD-40 is too light weight, but...it's better than nothing. Use an old toothbrush, or use one of those metal handled "acid swabbing brushes" sold at harbor freight. That is what they were called in the military.

Could have been caught in floods, or driven through salt water(puddles, flood waters, or from riding the beach).

Funny thing is I live in the Midwest Rust Belt and have never seen one like this. Even have worked on quite a few that people haven't taken the best of care and still have never seen the CV nuts look anything like those
Has to have been in the ocean somewhere

lfhoward 03-24-2013 05:40 PM

It looks like it's on a Jeep that was on a ship that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in WW2, then found and photographed by James Cameron.

Rusty axle and nuts.

I got my 08 new and havent been in salt water, they look exactly like your photo. This item is listed as covered by the limited lifetime powertrain warranty but rust is not. Now rust is flying out of the nut cap of wheel. Looks like rust spin art.
They need to acknowledge this just like the ball joint issue on the 05.
OH and the radios that lose time from birth.
