Model:Rio grande

Engine:2.5 L

I have a 95 Rio Grande 2.5 L Manual. Help!!! I have replaced the transfer case and transmission to the year 1990. I got in the other day and tried to start it. Got a loud whining noise followed by a grind... Engine wasn't budging. Had the problem diagnosed... The starter. My father helped me remove the starter ( solenoid wire was snapped... Don't know if that happened during removal or not). I have since then tried to replace the starter with a remanufactured year 95 starter... Same loud noise, no grinding...flywheel didn't engage, gear inside starter just bumped it... Realized I needed a 90' starter... Too big!! Also keep in mind that I have manually turned the engine( don't think that's the problem). Do I need to maybe rebuild my old starter or buy aftermarket??
