Jeep Information

I have a 1980 CJ-7. I drove to the store the other day, parked and went in. When I went to leave, I couldn't get it to move in 2 wheel, so I put it in 4 high and drove the 1/8th a mile home. I started messing around with it and found that sometimes the rear wheels would work for a few seconds, then go dead again. August of 2012, it had new 4:88 gears installed, but I remember hearing a really loud popping from the rear of the Jeep a couple of times recently. I'm new to Jeeps, and I really don't know where to begin. Does anyone have any suggestions?
