Wicked noise - engine area.

Hello fellows,
Our beloved 2002 Libby has developed this tapping/clanking sound out of the blue on a cold start last morning. It is scary to think this could be a spun bearing or some rod issue. I have also heard suggestions ranging from fallen rocker arm to a cracked flexplate.

Is there any reasonably reliable way to diagnose? Should I just open my valve covers and look in there? If not I'll just deliver it to a decent mechanic on Monday.

Thank you.

I'd definitely pull the valve covers and have a look. Does it stop when it warms up? If so it may just be a bad lash adjuster. If a Rocker dropped it would not stop when warm. I've got one bad lash adjuster that ticks loudly for about a minute SOMETIMES. I know what one it is but drives me nuts. Haven't had a chance to pull my VC.

Yes, there's synthetic in it, done less than 2k miles ago. Dipstick seems fine. Is it possible that oil is not getting where it needs to because of some type of sludge?

I might try to open valve covers tomorrow if I have time, but could it be something as stupid as exhaust leak? It sounds like a damn tank now.

Oh yeah, it doesn't stop when warm, but it is possible that it gets quieter. It is also possible I'm just imagining things.

Sounds like exhaust to me.

If you dropped a rocker you'd get a misfire code. Well, at least I did.

I'd take one of the valve covers off and start it up to make sure there is oil flowing through the engine .

Broken connecting rod I'll be lucky if I get engine swapped for 2k, thats the quote so far. He said no signs of overheat - go figure. I'm really lucky with this jeep haha

You can replace the engine with a newer 3.7 out of another Chrysler product if you do a couple of things to make the updated engine compatible with your 02's computer. Read thru this:

They are not too bad to pull yourself. There is a write up on them in this forum.

No guys, it is not doable without a garage and an array of tools and time. My guy will charge me 700$ for labor and that sounds very fair. With my experience and resources I couldn't tackle this period, but if I did it would take weeks. Otherwise I can have it by Sunday!

Money hurts but I've already given up on that amount

P.S.Any idea why the rod would fail like that? Engine sounded really clean before it happened - I've definitely taken care of it, no abuse either... Sick to my stomach having to pay for this

$700 for a swap is very fair.

You said some mechanic confirmed it was a 'broken rod'. How did they determine this?

I don't know. I can ask next time I see him, but he's real straight forward. For instance, he admitted he can't get the engine for 1300$ like he did a week ago, so he told me to wait until a better deal comes up. He could've said lets get the one for 2k, there's nothing else available. I kind of trust him and he did my rear end before that dealership couldn't fix.

Where would I look for an engine outside of ebay? Junkyards seem kind of sketchy
