Why is my AC compressor slipping?

All was fine with the ac system until I just finished replacing the water pump. Then cranked to purge air from cooling system and the ac compressor was engaging but slipping and turning very slow along with a slipping noise.....not real loud. What the????? it turns by hand pretty easy with engine off. With engine started, I carefully turned by hand and it is a bit stiff. Does this mean the clutch is bad?.....the compressor is bad? Why did this happen after water pump replacement???? Help appreciated

Wash it off with clean water and let dry and try again, sounds like you might have gotten some coolant in the clutch.

No luck with that. Thanks tho......checked the voltage to the compressor and getting 14 volts. Is that correct??? I notice when the clutch engages, as it is turning (way too slow) it is wobbling as if it is pulling up unevenly. This would explain the slipping, right? Anyone have a guess what to do next? Read about the compressor coil voltage, but don't know where it is located. Help appreciated.

Well it's now time for a new compressor(and reciever/dryer and orifice tube).

Yeah its time for the compressor to go to the scrapper, along with the other goodies. Compressor voltage is the voltage at the electrical connector for the a/c clutch. It will be battery voltage(11.5-12.5v KOEO, 13.8-14.5v KOER). That just tells you that you have voltage to it. What you would check is resistance thru the coil windings in the clutch. It's not an issue now though, as yours has already bit the big one.

Hey we all goof up once in a while. Luckily you caught it before you spent a bunch on parts. Normally you cant run it incorrectly, as it will be too long or too short. Apparently there is an exception!
