Whining transmission '05

I recently started hearing a light whining sound from the trannmission. The sound started when I was testing 4wd (bought it recently). Also the whining is very noticeable when in 4 low (is that normal?).

Could it be bad tranny or tcase fluid? Is it an easy job to do?

For starters,Check the fluid level in the transmission and transfer case. And yes there is a certain amount of noise from the transfer case when in 4hi or 4low especially when engaged on dry pavement.
