Water Pump Replacement?

I was driving my 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited (V6 3.7) and my battery light came on. The weather was roughly20-30F, road were icy, but nothing occured out of the ordinary to lead to a problem arising. I pulled over at a friends not more than a mile later and white smoke was slowly rising from the hood. I called a shop and they asked for me to bring it in. Witting the two miles of driving to the shop the car began making a grinding sound and the car quickly red lined on the thermostat meter. At the shop the mechanic told me the water pump bearings were shot and would need to be replaced. I was just posting to see if anyone has ever had this problem and what the cause and solution was. An if it is the water pump, how hard is it to fix yourself? Thanks for any help or advice anyone may have.

Sounds like the water pump to me. I just replaced mine maybe 2weeks ago. It's so easy to do I believe it was 8 bolts on the pump. The new pump cost me 60$ plus I recommend replacing your belt while your in it. It was only another 20$

Thanks to all who helped with the post. It was indeed the water pump. Very easy replacement. 50$ new pump, 15$ belt, and an hour of work. Beats the 235$ the shop wanted to charge me. Great Success )
