Liberty CRD Malfunctions
My problems have been endless with the MIL along with the wierd shifting at 50-60 mph, losing power at speed, rear brake noise on backup and what I call is a turbo stutter...
March 2006, the dealer service department decided to change the tourque converter to a Grand Cherokee tourque converter. Since the tourque converter change the light MIL has not come on, but the wierd 50-60 mph shifting and turbo stutter is still there. The engine losing it's mind at speed and losing power is also gone. I met with a STAR rep here in Denver and he told me that a software change is in the works and is due sometime in May 2006. It costs DC over $1M at each software release. Rear brake noise on backup. The STAR rep said their is a fix right now, to the surprise of my mechanic. He called it a "caliper strap" I believe. So get your brakes fixed.

MIL Light Shows Done but...
My MIL light went on today on a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I went through the process of trying to get the codes from the dash display, and the code showed up as "Done". I have not been able to find out what to do next. The MIL light is still on. I am not sure if I should just ignore this until it goes away, or if I should bring it to the dealer. Since I don't see a code and it shows "Done" - do I assume everything is OK? Thanks,

Unless the MIL light flashes there is no panic. I've had it go off in the Compass and the Grand. No code on the Compass, 1/2 tank of gas, checked the gas cap and everything - nothing. Took it to the dealer and they said maybe the throttle positioning sensor. It went out the next time that I filled up and before the part came in so I cancelled the appointment. It may have been bad gas, that can also set it off. I put on a locking gas cap shortly after that. That was 30K miles ago.
MIL went off in the Grand about a year ago, checked all of the normal stuff pulled a code for a low level leak in the evap system, couldn't find it, put on the gas cap left over from the Compass and it went out after the next fill up. Just a personal opinion. If the MIL is steady, don't be too concerned if you can't find anything obviously wrong and it runs OK. Wait to see what happens after your next fill up or two.

The main problem is, the computers in these cars today are made cheaper and cheaper
and in China to boot. Remember the old days when your early 80's home computer would reset for reasons like, washing machine went into a different cycle or the toasters heating coil just turned back on or went off? It's all about line noise! Think about all the line noise in any auto. The heaters blower motor has brushes that make very small sparks while running. How about those spark plugs? Now there is a ton of line noise. The bottom line is, the filtering of line noise in auto computers is going low grade to save cost. In fact, everything electricial is! I have to agree with my oldest son that once said; "Computers don't belong in cars." And he's a computer tech teacher. Good luck. |

We were wondering back in the '90 when they were going to go to a 24V system and lower the amps because of all of the new electronics. Alternators are having to put out more than ever these days.
