trac loc

I recently purchased a 2003 liberty, I got a great deal or did I? I paid 7300.00. the jeep has 46000 miles on it and is great shape. I did a carfax on it, zero accidents or problems. any thoughts? I'm about to do a bunch of routine maint. because I don't know the exact history of what has or has not been done over the years. My question is how do I tell if it has trac loc or not? I do not see a tag on the rear axle, is there any way to tell in the vin or another way? Thanks

Do you know if it has the off-road package or towing package from the factory? If so you've got your self a tracloc. Only use the Chrysler antifriction modifier through jeep or a driveline shop as your additive.

I don't think it has a tow package it did not come with a tow hitch, or wiring. however it does have skid plates to include the gas tank, plus two front tow hooks and one driver side rear hook.

Jack the rear of the vehicle so the rear wheels are off the ground. Put the transmission in neutral and manually spin one of the rear wheels. If both wheels turn in the same direction, it has a limited slip carrier. If they spin in the opposite direction from each other, its an open carrier. Note that this does not always apply to mechanical lockers. You can also remove the cover and look into the carrier. If it has an open carrier, all you'll see is the spider and side gears inside the carrier housing. Plenty of pictures on the internet as to what it looks like.

Just look at the axle tag if it is still there. It should be on the drivers side axle tube and say either "open" or "trac-loc" and the gear ratio. Or just get a "build sheet". You should have one anyway.
