SuperTech Full Synthetic - is it ok?

Hi all,

I have a Liberty 2005 3.7 4x2 Sport. Been taking good care as far as engine oil. Since 5K I used Mobil 1. Recently, due to the economy downturn, I switched back to conventional oil (@ 100K). Now the car is 130K. Found SuperTech Full Synthetic 5 quart jug for $17 (South Cali) and thought I should give it a try.

Does anyone have any problem with this oil?
What is the recommended oil change interval if I now use synthetic (and FRAM Extended oil filter good for 10K)?

I do about 80% highway and 20% local streets. About 2000 mile a month.

The oil meets SM specs. it is OK the Fram filter is pretty much bottom of the barrel thou.

I would still stick with Mobil 1, only 6 or 8 bucks more for 5 quarts container
one area I don't go cheap on

SuperTech is walmart brand I believe.
Walmart stuff is cheap, I would stay away.
Fram filters are crap, get a pureolator filter(yellow/gold filter with a rough texture)

The SuperTech oil is made by the same folks that make the "expensive" oil with the flashy bottles. Use it if you want.

I agree...the Fram filter is a no-no. Fram = Trash. Might as well wrap your newspaper around the oil filter housing and tape it in place if you're going to use Fram.

I got the FRAM XG3600 for $8.97 @ Walmart. Thought it was good. OK, I will not use FRAM next time. Mobile 1 M1-209 was available for $12.99. I was debating...I knew Mobil is a good name but was trying to save a few bucks.

Any recommendations on the oil filter that goes with synthetic oil? thanx

I use M1 TD synth, and run a M1 301 larger filter (.5 qt more oil). But this is on my CRD. Filter is most likely different on your 05 gasser. When I'm traveling around - usually check the Smallmart's in the bigger towns. Sometimes they will have the filter needed at a considerably lower price than any of the auto parts stores. By quite a bit. When found - usually will by at least 2. Do the same thing with M1 oil - Smallmart usually will have a sale on it every 3 to 4 months - in 4 or 5qt jugs. At least they did last year.

Will keep your rig running for less cash with just a little advance planning.

I'll second that. SuperTech is bottled by Warren Distribution. They bottle one heck of a lot of different oils under various labels for a lot of outlets. I use a local supplier's labeled synthetic blend oil in my Cummins ISX semi engine that is blended for them by Warren out of its Council Bluffs, IA facility. I get better metal wear numbers out of the Cummins than I did with the pricier Amsoil and Schaeffer products. Not saying the Warren stuff is better than Amsoil, Mobil, etc, but it is no slouch either. Any oil that can perform in my Cummins for 25,000 mile oil change intervals, and produce metal wear numbers that are 1/3 that of the high end synthetics, and I can get a 40% synthetic blend delivered to my house for $9 a gallon is worth considering. And this oil is blended by the same outfit that blends the SuperTech products.

Ok.... oil 101 lesson. Motiva, out of Port Arthur, TX is the primary source in North America for ALL base oils, and are the largest base oil producer in the world. They are co-owned by Shell and Saudi Arabia. Infineum makes the lion's share of additive packages for most of the suppliers in the U.S. The bulk of the oil you see on the shelf (except for some of the higher end synthetics) are produced in one way or another by these two companies. There are a few differences in additive packages with some labels, but not enough to cause any real eyebrow raising. The standards for SM, CJ, and other specifications for oils are such that they allow little deviation from the standard to qualify in their classification.

Use what you feel comfortable with. Will never down anyone for choosing a high end boutique oil for their ride. But those that look at the "cheaper" oils should not lose sleep over using these products as well. At least we still have the freedom to choose. The industry has standardized so much on products that, for most intents and purposes, we end up choosing an oil brand based more on loyalty than any real scientific data. The differences in oil within the same classification are so minute as to really not mean much.

I use Mobil 1 5W-20 with a Mobil 1 Filter for my peace of mind. I get it on sale for 5 Quarts and the filter for 29.99 at either Autozone or Advance Auto.

Like my previous rant on oil, the filters are made by only a few companies in N. America and are labeled under various brands. Wix, Baldwin, Donaldson make the lion's share of the top brand labeled oil filters. Fram is another story. I would have no problem running the Wix filters for just about any application. They make filters under their Wix label and the Napa label. Donaldson, last I checked was producing the Purolator label and some others. Baldwin is into so many different labels including the Fleetguard filters for large commercial trucks.

There has been problems off and on with Fram filters over the years. Just to be safe, I would just avoid them. Other than that, the choices are wide open. One of the finest filters out there is the Amsoil EO filters. They are made by Donaldson. Really good filters and worth every penny. Just a little pricey for my taste. After that, the Wix/Napa brand is pretty solid, as is the Mobil and Purolator labeled filters and the Auto Store branded filters. Stick with these and you cut any risk of a problem.

Did you research who makes the Supertech Synthetic and review the lab tests? It's inexpensive but you're passing on bad info about the oil itself. The Fram oil filter is really just a plug to keep your oil from draining out and coincidentally barely performs the function of a filter. Don't ever use them.

I love the Super Tech 2 stroke outboard oil. I use 8oz in every tank of diesel. As long as you change your oil and filter regularly you will be fine.

I use Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter with a Wix filter. I also have used Motorcraft filters from Walmart when I'm in a jam and can't get to the LPS to grab the Wix filter. The Motorcraft filter has an anti drainback valve and claims 99% filteration. I agree with other posters about the Fram don't use it if possible.

Supertech 15-40 diesel/fleet oil is a good value and the numbers are close to Rotella
