stolen spare

A friend's son just had the spare stolen off the back of his Libby. Are the studs that hold the spare drilled for a padlock or should he buy a set of locking nuts to prevent further theft? Thanks in advance!

I bought a set of 5 locking lug nuts for the 4 on the ground + the spare. You could go with a cable bike lock, but the set cost me around $20. There is also a guy on ebay selling some nuts that keep the actual holder from being stolen. You can't put a socket on them because it takes a special tool which comes with it for only $4 for the works.

Our '02 had a factory lock, the '06 didn't. I bought a set of five McGard locks for the '02 and sold the factory lock to a guy at work for $5.

If you're going to use a dog, use something with more of a reputation as a biter... Like a dalmation or Cocker Spaniel....
